DFW Weekend Recap: February 24

It was a busy, busy weekend across the DFW high school sports landscape: girls UIL playoffs finishing the second round; boys UIL tiebreakers taking place; TAPPS hoops whittling down to the state championships; softball and baseball getting into full swing; and so much more.

We'll do our best to recap the high points of the weekend here.

UIL GIRLS HOOPS: Cedar Hill edged past Denton Guyer on Friday night in overtime, overcoming a double-digit first half deficit. It seemed as though Denton Guyer, ranked No. 5 in the state, would control the game and move onto the next round. Little by little, Cedar Hill (No. 13 in the state) chipped away to force overtime and complete the comeback.

The Colony downed Everman 61-44 to advance to another regional quarterfinal. Jewel Spear had a huge game for The Colony, scoring 27 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and adding 4 blocks. The Colony limited Everman to just 18 points in the first half, building a 19-point lead heading into the break.

UIL BOYS HOOPS: There were five tie-breakers in the area to determine some remaining playoff spots. For the 4th seed in 5-6A, Northwest Eaton got past Keller Timber Creek 50-45; Garland downed South Garland 59-51 for the 4th seed in 10-6A; Grapevine up-ended Saginaw 62-50 to take the 4th seed in 7-5A; Fort Worth Dunbar dominated Kennedale 95-64 for the No. 1 seed in 9-4A; Anna took the No. 3 seed in 11-4A from Aubrey with a 57-44 win.

TAPPS GIRLS HOOPS: Plano is well represented in 6A TAPPS as both Plano John Paul II and Plano Prestonwood advanced for a showdown in the State Semifinals. John Paul II defeated Parish Episcopal 61-42 while Prestonwood took home a close 50-48 win over Bishop Lynch.

The DFW area will also have a representative in the 5A TAPPS championship as Fort Worth Southwest Christian (defeated Austin Regents 59-25) and Dallas Christian (defeated St. Michael's Catholic 61-48) will meet in one of the semifinal matchups.

TAPPS BOYS HOOPS: In 6A, Plano John Paul II downed Bishop Lynch 52-49 to advance to the State Semifinals to meet Midland Christian, which beat Plano Prestonwood.

Like the girls 5A, the boys 5A will have a DFW representative as Grapevine Faith, which beat St. Michael's 73-65, will tussle with Frisco Legacy, which beat Garland Brighter Horizons 70-36, for the right to play for the state championship.

The same will apply to 4A as Colleyville Covenant and Flower Mound Coram Deo meet in the state semis after winning their respective regional finals.

TAPPS GIRLS SOCCER: Just one of the three TAPPS girls state championship made their way to the DFW area as Grapevine Faith shut out San Antonio Christian 2-0 for the Division II crown. In the other two matchups Fort Worth Nolan lost to St. Agnes 6-0 in the Division I state title and Dallas Covenant lost to Schertz John Paul II 4-1 in the Division III match.

TAPPS BOYS SOCCER: The DFW came back empty-handed on the boys side as St. Thomas Episcopal defeated Dallas Covenant 1-0 in the Division III state championship match.
