Stephenville girls soccer was too much for Liberty Hill in Thursday's 2-0 UIL 4A state championship win, so it claimed its second state title in three years.
"They're all pretty sweet," said Stephenville coach Casey Weil. "Each one's different because you've got different kids."
"We went out a little earlier than we planned last year," added Weil. "We had one lapse all year long [in 2019]. We had one loss. And it came the very last game of the district, and I think it humbled them up, made them real hungry going into the playoffs, and I can't say enough about them. They played unbelievable."
VYPE Player of the Game Ciara Johnston matched the scoring of Stephenville's 2-1 state title game win from 2017 with a pair of first half goals on Thursday.
"Our plan was to show up and win, and show everybody what we got," said Johnston. "We give all the glory to God, and we're thankful that we got to be here."
Along with Johnston's scoring, Stephenville also relied on its shutdown defense. Liberty Hill came into Thursday's match with a 189-8 goal advantage in 2019, but was shutout over the 80 minutes of play.
"We don't give up many goals," said Weil. "I think we've scored about 150 something now. If we continue to do that and put up big numbers, we give ourselves a pretty good chance to win."
Stephenville now turns its attention to a third gold in 2020, when Johnston's a senior.
"We're going to do the same thing we did this year," Johnston said of next year's plan.
