AUSTIN - When Remon Smith took over the Klein Forest men's track program three years ago, he told the then-freshman that if they stuck with him they would be state champions.

On Saturday, Smith lived up to that promise.

Klein Forest scored 42 points as a team, took silver in the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays and claimed the program's first-ever Class 6A Men's Track & Field Team State Championship.

"It's a great honor," Smith said. "The guys have worked hard. These guys have been coached for the past two or three years. We'd get to regionals and come up a little short. This year they came with the mindset of 'we're going to finish the job' and those guys put in the work since day one. They accomplished the job.

"They finished what they started."

The scoring started for Klein Forest in the field events with Maurice Westmoreland taking fifth in the shot put and fourth in the discus.

In the end those points proved to be a huge difference between first and second.

"Those points were huge," Smith said. "Him in the field all year has been clutch."

Then the big points would come from the relay teams.

The 4x100-meter relay took silver with a time of 40.49 and then the 4x200-meter relay would also grab silver with a time of 1:24.13. The pair of second place finishes gave Klein Forest 32 of its eventual 42 points.

"I'm excited," Auhmad Robinson said. "Hard work since my freshman year. It happened my junior year."
