West Brook Football is looking at a summer of discontent after a 2018 season that propelled them to the 6A Division 2 state title game.The 35-34 loss to Longview has the Bruins on a mission to complete unfinished business towards the elusive championship.
"Anytime you're able to make a run like we did last year is always great for your city, your program.We're returning 34 players so the kids know what their expectation are," said Eric Peevey, head football coach of West Brook.
"At a school like ours you're going to have athletes year in and year out, you're going to win here it's just a matter of how many games you win."
The Bruins return key players Troy Yowman (QB, 2019), Joe Hayes (WR, 2020) and super star sophomore Bryce Anderson (SS, 2022) who will be looked upon to lead the 2019 campaign.
"Troy was 4-0 for us last year and threw for over a thousand yards," said Peevey.
"We're moving Joe to receiver this year where he feels confident, he made a lot of plays for us last year there.Bryce is an extreme athlete who will start for us on defense, but we will have multiple packages for him on offense as well.You're going to see him all over the field."
West Brook is not taking the summer season lightly as what you do in June and July often represents how you perform early in the first weeks of the season.
"Some teams let their players off once school is out.We don't do that, our kids started their conditioning season two weeks ago, we had over 300 kids go through our program, we are having great workouts.
Along with their summer wide conditioning program West Brook is well organized with 7on7, developing their passing game and aerial defense.
"We've been going through 7on7 for a while now," said Peevey.
"We meet every Tuesday in a league with Port Arthur (Memorial) and Port Neches (Groves), we have a tournament this weekend at New Caney.It's all about timing and team work.With summer conditioning that's your foundation."
With having spring football during the month of May West Brook's lone scrimmage will be against PNG in the third week of August.
"We've scrimmaged Port Neches for the past six years now," said Peevey.
"That will be their second scrimmage so they will be coming at us like a real game.They will be coached up, not making a lot of mistakes, and it will be a good situation for our kids going into that."
The Bruins officially start their 2019 season August 30 against Houston Bellaire at home.Game time is listed at 7pm.
