VYPE ATX/SATX FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS PREVIEW 9.3.20

Every Thursday we take a look at some of the top games in the Austin/San Antonio area you should be checking out on Fridays.

Let's take a look at this weeks must watch games!

Game 1: Regents vs Pflugerville Connally

Time: Fri, 9/3 7:00 PM

Location: Pfield (1440 W Pecan St., Pflugerville, TX 78660)

Preview: The Knights come into this one with an opening season win over Grace Community 45-8. On the other end, Connally comes into this contest losing a close match against the Austin Maroons. Connally will be a good test for Regents leading up to district and on their march for a repeat as State Champions. Regents will continue to rely on signal caller Drew Dickey to lead this team while also leaning on the Knights Defense to set them up.

Game 2: Dripping Springs vs Hays

Time: Fri, 9/3 7:30 PM

Location: Tiger Stadium (940 US 290, Dripping Springs, TX 78620)

Preview: Although they may have a new mascot this season, Hays looks to build off their successful 2020 campaign. The Hawks made it to the State-Semis last season losing to eventual champion Katy. They will look to continue their dominance on the ground last week against the Tigers defense. For Dripping Springs it will be all about QB Austin Novosad. The junior QB had an impressive Sophomore campaign and will look to build of that this year. The Tigers will need to continue to shore up their defense if it hopes to stop the Hays running game.

Game 3: Southside vs Somerset

Time: Fri, 9/3 7:30 PM

Location: Bulldog Stadium (7791 E. Third St., Somerset, TX 78069)

Preview: Senior QB Richard Torres started his last year as the Cardinals quarterback with a bang. He tied a UIL record throwing for 8 TDs in the Cardinals week 1 victory over Brownsville Lopez 62-14. The Cardinals will continue to develop their roster, only returning 11 starters from last year, as they travel to Somerset. Speaking of the Bulldogs they will look to continue on their from their week 1 victory. Led by Head Coach Koy Detmer, the Bulldogs started the season with a 36-22 victory over Brackenridge. However, this game on paper will seem to be decided by Richard Torres.

Game 4: Madison vs Smithson Valley

Time: Fri, 9/3 7:00 PM

Location: Ranger Stadium (14001 State Highway 46 W, Spring Branch, TX 78070)

Preview: Each team comes into Week 2 hoping to build off of their Week 1 wins. Smithson Valley defeated Warren 32-13 while Madison won a defensive bout 14-5. The Rangers currently lead the all-time series 12-4 and have won the last 2 matchups. Madison will need to rely on its defense once again if it hopes to break their 2 game losing streak to the Rangers. Malachi Lane and Travis McCracken both had strong rushing showings for Smithson Valley against Warren and will most likely lean on them again tomorrow.

Game 5: Judson vs Lake Travis

Time: Fri, 9/3 7:30 PM

Location: Cavalier Stadium (3322 Ranch Rd. 620 South, Austin, TX 78738)

Preview: One week after a stunning 35-28 victory over De Soto, Judson has to immediately turn their sights on another Texas power; Lake Travis. The Cavaliers come into the game 1-0 as well after a convincing 40-28 victory over Arlington Martin. Lake Travis has had Judson's number as of late, winning the last 3 meetings. Judson's last victory over Lake Travis came in the 2017 regular season (65-45). The Rockets will need to lean on their defense once again if they hope to start the season 2-0 and declare themselves one of the teams to watch in Texas. Meanwhile for Lake Travis it is business as usual. They come into the game with a 16-game regular season winning streak and a bad taste in their mouth after a first round playoff exit last season.
