THE HUNGER IS REAL FOR ALDINE DAVIS SENIOR JAYLON JONES THIS SPRING.
The Falcons’ speedster was part of the 4x200-meter relay last year that fell short of making it to the finals at the Regional meet in Waco.
This year, Jones, also a second-team all-district receiver for the football team who runs a 4.4 40-yard dash, knows there is no room for error.
“We’re definitely hungry,” Jones said. “That kind of stuck a hole in my heart, especially me and the other guy returning from last year, Johnny Perry. We want to go farther. We want to go to State this year.”
Jones, who also runs the 100 meters (personal record of 11.15 seconds), 200 meters (22.44 seconds), and 4x100- meter relay, is getting collegiate interest from Texas Southern and Florida State.
He is optimistic this year that everything falls into place.
“We want to win it all,” he said. “That’s the big thing. Go to State. That’s the final destination. And after that, we want to help everybody go to college, get a scholarship. That and winning go hand in hand.”
VYPE talked more with Jones, who has taken on a bigger leadership role with the Falcons this year mentoring the younger athletes.
VYPE: What’s it like playing football and running track at Davis?
JONES: It's tough. It's a busy schedule. You don't really have much time to do anything else except focus on your sports.
VYPE: Did you see your work in track pay off in football?
JONES: For sure. Once we get on the football field, I’m faster than most guys out there. Most guys can't really keep up with me.
VYPE: When you're on the blocks, what's going through your mind?
JONES: It's a clear mind. Just trying to stay focused on the race. Just me, alone, in my lane. You've got to be the first one out when that gun pops.
