District 10-4A DII could be one of the most decorated groupings in the history of football in the State of Texas.
La Marque has won five State Titles. Sealy has won five State Titles. Wharton has a State Title. Sweeny has a State Title. That’s 12 titles. They are legendary programs of the past, who would love to resurrect to the present.
Bellville is the new kid on the block running the show in the district with a throwback-style of their own.

BELLVILLE BRAHMAS
Coach Grady Rowe takes it “old school” with the Slot-T offense. Hey, it works as Bellville reached the Regional Semifinals in 2021, going 12-1 overall and 5-0 in district play. The offensive line is in sync led by Jakob Hranicky, Marcus Smith, Jacob Miles and Aiden Tovar. TE Bucky Koy also chips in up front. Running the unique style to perfection is QB Reid McCann, who only improved with a full offseason as the projected starter. Sam Hranicky will be the lead back. The offense returns seven, which keeps the continuity going inside the huddle. On the defensive side of the ball is a budding DI prospect. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound DJ Sanders is a beast on the line of scrimmage, especially at the Class 4A level. The sophomore destroys opponents’ offensive game plans. Sal Reyes and Cory Richardson will help on the line, while Lane and Landon Lischka run the linebacking corp. Hunter Kunkel, Cole Neumann and Wyatt Schiel will flip back and forth from WR to DB.
SEALY TIGERS
One of the most decorated programs in the State of Texas is Sealy High School – the home of Eric Dickerson and coach TJ Mills. Legends on the game. As Houston expands west, Sealy will become a landing spot and the Tigers will resurrect again. Coach Shane Mobley is ready and has the Sealy program headed in the right direction. The Tigers went 8-4 and 4-1 in district play, advancing to the second round of the postseason. They return 11 starters and the most important is D’Vonne Hmielewski – a 5-foot-10 QB who threw for 1,800 yards and rushed for another 1,000. He needs protection and Kyle Willingham and Rylan Riechardt should provide it. Haden Wernecke is the lead receiver and A’vonte Nunn will be the lead back. William Forrester will anchor the defense up front, while the trio of Richard Hahn, Jeffrey Neu and Hector Murillo will patrol the middle of the field at LB. Wernecke will flip around and anchor the secondary.
WEST COLUMBIA ROUGHNECKS
What a great name. The Roughnecks of West Columbia. Epic. The throwback name defines West Columbia’s style of play from its Wing-T offense to their scrappy defense. The ‘Necks went 6-4 last season and return 12 starters from an Area Finalist. QB Tate Thrasher is the straw that stirs the drink, running the offense with precision. Makailum Castile will be the featured back to move the chains. He doubles as the team’s best tackler at safety. Elijah Burton and Mason Wallace anchor the OL, while JaMarcus Higgins gives the offense a downfield threat. The defense has some teeth. With Castile in the back end, Gavis Gross, Daxton Newell, Casey Webb and Cole Gotcher have freedom to pin their ears back and make plays in the front seven.
BROOKSHIRE ROYAL FALCONS
Theadis Reagins knows what winning looks like, having been an assistant at North Shore High School under legendary coach Jon Kay. Royal is exploding with new development and the Falcons could become a player as the community fills out in the near future. For now, the star of the show is Northwestern-commit Justin Cryer – a 6-foot-2, 225-pound LB with tremendous athleticism. His brother LJ Cryer was a national basketball recruit now at Baylor. That’s great, but he’s needs some help from the rest of the nest. QB Ashton Robinson needs to find WRs Antonio Page and DaShawn Adams, who are both legit game-breakers. Erick Robledo, James Oviedo and Kaden Stone will fill out the OL. The defensive line of Jeremiah Robinson, Jalen Bray and Zechariah Robinson will keep offensive linemen off of Cryer so he can do his thing (103 tackles). The Falcons went 4-6 last season but need to get competitive in district play to capture a playoff spot.
SWEENY BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs reached the postseason in 2021 with a 4-6 record but were bounced in the first round of the postseason. Coach Clayton Odom will rely on nine returning starters to take leadership roles regardless of their classification. Jaylyn Washington is a talent at RB and will run behind Xavier McGregor. Sloan Novak will be the playmaker at WR. The stud on defense is Gavin Massey (6-foot-3, 270-pounds), who controls the line of scrimmage so Payton Piece can make plays at LB. Tim Shepard will lead the secondary but will need some help. Two-way players and conditioning will be key to the Bulldogs’ success.
LA MARQUE COUGARS
La Marque, Texas was once the epicenter of high school football in the Lone Star State. The Cougars won back-to-back titles (1995, 96, 97) and added two more in 2003 and 2006. Count them… 9 State Final appearances since 1993. Coach Wade Oliphant’s team hopes to build the Galveston Country school back into a power program. The Cougars went 5-5 last season and fell in the first round of the postseason. Back in the mix are Salahadin Allen at RB and Dylan Thomas at WR. Darrell Williams will run the offense at QB and the defense at LB. Brandon Russell and Maxwell Sanja are the bigs on both sides of the ball. The lack of depth is the issue at La Marque and will need for some young talent to fill some holes quickly to get into the postseason.
WHARTON TIGERS
The Wharton Tigers can only go up from here. The Tigers suffered through a 0-10 season in 2021 and hopes that Alvin Dotson can turn around the culture of the once-proud program. RB Raymond Hudson will be leaned on to carry the load at RB, while Jared Newsome, Ja’Korian Baldridge and JaKorian Allen will stretch the field on the edge. The bigs who will play on both sides of the ball are Terryse Harris, Kendon Mayberry and Gionvanni Martin. The rebuild begins for Dotson and the Tigers.
