Johnson delivered easily the week’s biggest headline, as the T.P. Miller-led Jaguars routed Vandegrift, 38-7, this past Friday. For a team that reached the Region IV Championship last fall, few starts to the season could be better than a decisive win over an Austin powerhouse. Now, Johnson will look to carry that momentum forward as it prepares for Odessa.
Two-time defending state champion Smithson Valley hasn’t missed a beat, opening the fall with a convincing 47-14 win over Sotomayor. The Rangers headline a strong group of 5A contenders, with unbeaten Boerne and Alamo Heights also coming off decisive victories, while Pieper took care of business in its clash with Buda Johnson.
Steele, meanwhile, finds itself in another heavyweight matchup after a tough road loss to Atascocita. The Knights will look to bounce back Friday night against Lake Travis, giving them little time to dwell on their first setback of the season.
Brennan secured its first win by lighting up the scoreboard against Reagan, while Madison, Canyon and 4A contender Davenport make their first appearances in the rankings. Davenport, in particular, will have a chance to make an immediate impression, facing unbeaten Boerne in one of Week 3’s more intriguing matchups.
The hierarchy is taking shape — and Week 3 has plenty of opportunities to shake it up.
