Georgetown, Texas is usually a peaceful town; the sort of bucolic, upscale community known for its local theater, picturesque parks along the San Gabriel River, and the sorts of trendy craft shows, street festivals and other communal gatherings on the Georgetown Square that one typically only sees on Virgin River.
Yes, I just admitted I’ve watched Virgin River.
But one night each year, the city splits in half along a red and blue divide that has nothing to do with politics. It’s the one night each year when East View faces Georgetown on the football field in “The Battle of Georgetown” -- and this Friday night’s (10/17) edition is the VYPE Central Texas Game of the Week.
There are more than just citywide bragging rights at stake in this year’s clash. East View and Georgetown both come in at 5-1 overall and, at 3-0, the only two remaining undefeated teams in District 8-5A-1.
East View in red is riding the momentum of last week’s win over a good Cedar Park squad. First year Head Coach Bill Robertson’s Patriots are scoring 34.7 points-per-game, led by quarterback Cormyc Guerro. The senior signal caller has completed 91-149 passes for 1,222 yards and 9 touchdowns with just one interception. Guerro is also the Pats’ leading rusher (45-542, 12.0 YPC), averaging just over 90 yards per game on the ground with 7 rushing touchdowns. Junior Jayvion Clater (71-397, 5.6 YPC, 7 TDs) also provides plenty of ground support. Senior Allen Blaylock (33-427, 12.9 YPC, 5 TDs) and sophomore Sam Williams (23-353, 15.3 YPC, 2 TDs) have been Guerro’s favorite targets thus far.
Senior linebacker/defensive end Tieson Ejiawoko anchors East View’s defense, averaging 8.2 tackles per game with 7 tackles for loss and 5 sacks.
Junior quarterback Kaleb McDougle leads the boys in blue from Georgetown. Coach Chuck Griffin’s Eagles are averaging 39.5 points per game behind McDougle (68-109, 949 Yds., 14 TD, 2 INT through five games). Unlike the Patriots, however, the Eagles rely on their running backs for their ground game. Through the first five games – Game 6 stats weren’t available at press time – Weston Steward, Jett Walker and Zechariah Walker have combined for 999 yards on 137 carries with 9 combined rushing touchdowns. Senior Xavier Warren (27-369, 13.7 YPC, 5 TDs) has paced the Eagles’ receiving corps through the first five games.
Junior Reagan Bollinger leads a stingy Georgetown that’s allowing 22.2 points per game with 38 tackles through five games. Senior Tennison Dean has also been disrupting opponents’ backfield with 5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.
A drive through the heart of old Georgetown will reveal that line where the street signs painted blue give way to those painted red on the east side of town. Come Saturday morning, the two sides will again co-exist in harmony on the Square. But not on Friday night when Georgetown and East View collide in this week’s VYPE Central Texas Game of the Week.
