THE RANKINGS: Is it the Year of the No. 28 Montgomery Bears?
LAST SEASON, MONTGOMERY WENT 28-19 OVERALL AND REACHED THE AREA ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS AFTER DISPATCHING WEST FORK IN A CLEAN SWEEP IN THE OPENING ROUND.
The Bears fell to Friendswood in a five-set thriller to close out their season.
First-team, all-district pick Delaney Wright is coming off a superior sophomore season where she had 551 kills to lead the Bears and registered a second-best 494 digs. Wright earned a spot on the TGCA All-State Team. In 2024, Wright also set the single-match kills record with 33 against Friendswood, which broke the record set back in 2017.
UT-Dallas-commit Savannah Welch, a second-team, all-district pick, chipped in 267 kills and a team-leading 102 blocks, while honorable mention, all-district pick Peyton Harts had 194 digs, 164 kills and 40 blocks.
Second-team, all-district selection Ava Collins chipped in a team-leading 680 assists and 297 digs, while Kennedy Marriott, an
honorable-mention, all-district pick, had 469 assists and 229 digs to her name.
LION PRIDE: Lake Creek Has The Depth To Reach State In Class 5A
Since their inaugural season in 2019, extensive playoff runs have become a staple for Lake Creek. Last spring, the Lions reached the Region III Final for the third consecutive year in Class 5A, further solidifying their reputation as one of Houston’s premier programs.
However, the Lions’ sights are set on more than just a deep postseason—they’re aiming for a championship. Though several key players from last year’s squad have graduated, a strong core returns to help coach Jeremy Schramm’s team reach that goal.
First-team, all-district honorees Wyatt Davis (Sr. SS) and Davis Lee (Sr. OF/DH) bring the veteran leadership needed for a potent lineup. They’ll be joined by junior outfielders Jackson Marshall and Reed Newkirk, both of whom earned second-team honors in 2024. On the mound, Lake Creek has three capable pitchers to anchor the staff: junior Harper Heathcott (second-team), as well as seniors Zachery Alarid (San Jacinto CC-commit) and Jaxson Thompson (East Texas Baptist).
While the Lions will still face the same tough competition after moving over to 17-5A, especially from A&M Consolidated, their aspirations are higher than ever.
