VYPE U: Porter Track Ends Season on a High Note

Porter accomplished many things during the 2020-2021 track season. On the girls' side, Porter sent 11 to Area and nine of those to Regionals. On the boy's side, Porter was able to send nine to Area and six of those to Regionals.

Senior Dezarai Stewart was able to break the school record in Discus. She clinched the record, over her sister, at the area meet with a throw of 125''11. She was also the only state qualifier for Porter. Her throw of 39'9 in the shot put secured her a first-place medal at regionals, while also earning her a trip to Austin. She finished her season with a ninth-place finish at state.

Another record was broken by freshman Eva Abshire. She was able to smash the 300M Hurdle record at the area meet with a time of 45.36. At the Regional Meet, she was able to qualify in finals for both hurdle events. While she did not earn a trip to the state meet, Abshire is and will be a new name you want to keep an eye out for.

Junior Kyla Heine was able to break the Long Jump record at Area, and again at Regionals. Heine holds the record with a jump of 17'7 1/2. Many things are yet to be seen as Heine is a multi-sport athlete and should have an unforgettable senior season.

The girls 4x200M Relay qualified for finals at Region, placing sixth. The team was composed of Regan Smith, Heine, Kendal Brown, and Gianna Austin.

Both boys and girls 4x400M Relay qualified for finals at the Regional Meet.

The girl's team was composed of Frida Orozco, Abshire, Austin, and Brown. They were able to finish fourth in the region with a time of 3.57.96, a new school record.

The boy's team was composed of Caleb Morris, Collin Wright, Ashton Smith, and Luke Cordle. Just like the girls they finished fourth in the region, again setting a new school record at 3.22.05.

Senior Luke Cordle was able to make history at Porter, as he advanced in all four of his events all the way to Regionals. These events included the long jump, 4x100M Relay, 200M Dash, and the 4x400M Relay. Though he broke many records and became a walking legacy in the halls of PHS, Cordle's time has come to an end. As Cordle graduates, Collin Wright will be the new name to watch moving forward.

Overall, this season was full of excitement and new beginnings. While the boys lose a handful of seniors, many underclassmen are looking forward to stepping in to fill those spots. Since the beginning of the season, the atmosphere has always been to compete and give it your all. This is something the underclassmen are ready for. Switching gears over to the girl's side, much of the team will be back. Though slightly disappointed at how this season ended, the girls are now even more motivated than ever to get back to the lab and take a shot at state.
