HOUSTON – Devin Contreras didn't always want to be a kicker.
In the seventh grade, Contreras started kicking because of a middle school coach who kept telling him about it.
Years later, that conversation is paying off for the Nimitz football program.
Contreras hit three field goals, including a 22-yard game-winner against Baytown Sterling as time expired, sending the Cougars to a 16-14 victory last week.
"The game-winner was the best thing that has ever happened to me," Contreras said. "It was an excitement that I never experienced before."
Contreras, who's main goal is playing at the next level, works on his craft just like every other player.
"I practice every day just kicking the ball," Contreras said. "I work on different techniques I can use in the game."
The Cougars are 2-0 to start the season, which marks the first 2-0 start since 2008 for Nimitz.
