A Century of Yates Pride — and Another Historic Run
One of the most legendary high schools in the city of Houston is Jack Yates High — better known as “Third Ward High.”
This year, the school is celebrating its 100th anniversary along with the 40th anniversary of the iconic 1985 State Championship team — a squad many consider one of the greatest in Texas high school football history.
In his first year at the helm, Jason Lewis has the Lions roaring. Yates is 11-0 and headed into the second round of the postseason. The Lions are coming off a dominant 50-24 win over Needville and now square off with Pine Tree High this weekend.
VYPE’s Matt Malatesta caught up with Coach Lewis to talk about the turnaround, the culture shift, and the energy buzzing across campus.
THE RETURN: Lloyd Banks Heads Back to Where It All Began
Lloyd Banks has been the face of Greater Houston high school track for more than a decade, leading the Fort Bend Marshall boys and girls programs to UIL gold—again and again and again.
But all dynasties evolve, and Banks’ legendary run at Marshall has come to a close—sending shockwaves throughout the Texas high school track community.
VYPE’s Matt Malatesta caught up with the iconic coach at his new home: Jack Yates High School.
This isn’t just a new chapter—it’s a full-circle moment. Banks is a proud Yates alum and previously served as an assistant coach for the Lions.
Now, he's back where it all began.
Because for Lloyd Banks, home is where the heart is.
