The 2019-20 basketball season ended in an off-the-backboard brick as the COVID-19 virus put an end to the state tournament.

Houston had four teams advance to state and VYPE will grant all four teams a share of the Team of the Year Award. Each had a great story line.

Dickinson hadn't been to state in 65 years and was hitting on all cylinders entering Final Four weekend. 65 years!!!!

Hightower was led by super-soph Bryce Griggs and company, looking to make school history if they could have reached the state finals. Three Hurricane teams made the Final Four before this year's group but hasn't won a game at state in school history.

Yates was poised for their fifth state title in 11 years under the direction of coach Greg Wise. They set the consecutive record for scoring 100-points in a game, breaking their own record a decade ago.

That leaves Stafford. Coach David Montano had the Spartans two games away from their first title since 1992. Stafford was off the grid in the preseason, sneaking up on everyone en route to state.

The bar has always been set high for Tomball’s Gemma Hopkins.

It started with older sister Lily Hopkins, who played at Tomball and still plays college ball at Texas-Arlington. Then came Catcher Hopkins, who has won a pair of state titles for Tomball baseball and is headed to play for Texas A&M.

Building a program from the ground up is never easy, but Lake Highlands head coach Emily Hubacek has wasted little time establishing a championship standard.

In just its first season, the new program exceeded expectations by finishing undefeated in district play and capturing a district championship. While the results were impressive, Hubacek knows sustaining success presents an entirely new challenge as the Wildcats prepare for a much tougher district in 2026.

CULTURE CHANGE: Boyd turning corner under Coach Johnson's energy

A new culture is taking root at McKinney Boyd, and head coach Stu Johnson believes that change will be the catalyst for turning the Broncos into a contender.

After playing a number of underclassmen a season ago, Boyd enters 2026 with valuable experience and renewed confidence. The record may not have reflected it last fall, but the foundation was laid by a young roster that gained meaningful Friday night reps. Now, those players return bigger, stronger and fully invested in Johnson's vision.
