BREAKING: UIL suspends all competition through March 29 due to Coronavirus outbreak

HOUSTON - In the matter of one day, the high school sports world has come to a screeching halt.

On Friday morning, the Southwest Preparatory Conference and TAPPS - both private school leagues - announced the cancellation of all sporting events until April 13. On Friday afternoon, the University Interscholastic League, which oversees all public school academic and athletic events in Texas, announced its plans to suspend all UIL competition through March 29.

"We are urging our member schools and their communities to stay vigilant and take every possible precaution to remain safe and healthy," said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt in a press release. "We understand there is a lot of uncertainty during this unprecedented time. Please know UIL leadership is working diligently to adjust to this rapidly evolving situation and will share updates as soon as possible."

According to the UIL press release, rehearsals and practices may be held "at the discretion of the local school district".
