VYPE U: Lamar Consolidated gets back on track with win over Montgomery

Madison Morris
Oct 28, 2019

Lamar Mustangs prepare to take the field.

Madison Morris

Lamar Consolidated High School football came out on top Friday night, ending their two-game losing streak with a much needed 55-14 win against Montgomery.

Baylor commit Taye McWilliams, who finished with 121 yards and three scores on 11 carries, scored the first touchdown of the night for Lamar Consolidated with 7:10 left in the first quarter. Montgomery remained scoreless throughout the entire first half and trailed Lamar Consolidated 28-0 at halftime.

Lamar Consolidated quarterback Byron Harris finished 9 of 15 for 145 yards and a touchdown.

After the break, Montgomery scored one touchdown each in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. They were unsuccessful in their comeback attempts in the end. Montgomery now stands at 1-4 in district play.

Montgomery will seek a key win next week against Paetow while Lamar Consolidated hopes to clinch a playoff spot with a win over Cleveland at their homecoming game.

The North Shore Mustangs reached the State Semifinals last season, only to fall to Austin Westlake in a lopsided matchup. With that loss came the end of an era, as head coach Willie Gaston bids farewell to one of the most decorated senior classes in recent memory. So, should the Mustangs be down in 2025? Not a chance. Quarterback Kaleb Maryland (Utah State-commit) has waited in the wings for three years and is finally getting his shot. The dynamic dual-threat playmaker is ready to carry the torch and lead the offense with explosiveness and poise. Maryland will benefit from a rebuilt but powerful offensive line, anchored by Isaac Aranda, Chase Brown, Abdus Kone, and Brandon Hebert, a 6-foot-6, 290-pound transfer from Port Arthur Memorial. With that kind of size up front, the run game should flourish, and Maryland will have time to make plays. At receiver, it's a new crew of rising stars: La’Damian Defreeze, Aubrey Johnson, Jaylen Bocard, and Dorian Barnes—all hungry to make a name for themselves. Guiding the offense is new offensive coordinator Ben Barkema, who joins the program from Deer Park. Defensively, North Shore will continue to bring the heat. In the trenches, Xavier Waters, Jaylen Fields, Zaqwaun Nunn (a Louisiana Tech commit from Clear Springs), and sophomore standout Jayden Johnson (already holding five D1 offers) form a fearsome front. Jayden Curry is poised for a breakout at defensive end. Dezmon Christian leads an inexperienced linebacker unit, while the secondary is bolstered by Tony Guillory at corner, and Juan Hernandez III, giving the defense both depth and playmaking potential. The names may change, but at North Shore, the standard remains the same: State title or bust.

Summer Creek High made a thunderous run to the State Semifinals last season, falling to eventual state champion Vandegrift—but not before establishing itself as a powerhouse under head coach Kenny Harrison. Nestled near IAH Airport, the Bulldogs’ rise has been rapid—and it’s no longer a secret: Summer Creek has arrived. With the graduation of standout QB Blake Thomas, Flower Mound transfer Noah Spinks steps in under center with high expectations. He’ll have the benefit of a seasoned offensive front, led by center Jonathan Bermudez, and a versatile backfield featuring Braylin Causey and Keshawn Jackson. At receiver, the Bulldogs are stacked. Holden Miller, Tre Brown, and Benny Easter Jr. form one of the most explosive trios in the region—capable of stretching the field and torching defenses. Defensively, it starts in the trenches with Brinley Tita, who brings power and grit up front, supported by edge rushers Amontre Harris and Van Cormier. At linebacker, Tyson Joiner and Tre Carroll fly to the football with relentless energy. And then there’s the secondary—loaded with talent and swagger. Marrell Davis and Caleb White headline a unit that can cover, hit, and change games in a flash.

The Atascocita Eagles soared to a 12-2 finish last season, with both losses coming at the hands of one familiar foe: North Shore—once in district play and again in the Regional Final. Now, with a seasoned squad and State dreams in sight, head coach Craig Stump and his team are ready to take the next step. Leading the charge is District MVP and Arizona State commit Cardae Mack, one of the most dynamic playmakers in the state. He’s back and hungry to finish the job. At quarterback, Isaiah “Rocket” Rasheed returns after a strong sophomore campaign and is expected to take a major leap in Year 3. His top target will be CJ Toney, a reliable and explosive weapon on the outside. Defensively, Atascocita brings the fire. Andre Jones and Jason Johnson (6-5, 280-pounds) provide the push in the trenches, while Rayvion Sauls—a relentless, sideline-to-sideline linebacker—will be the heart of the unit. In a loaded secondary, Hunter Sowell, Tavon Bolden, Trenton Blaylock are poised to shut down opposing aerial attacks. With star power, depth, and a chip on their shoulder, the Eagles are all in on a return to the Regional Final—and beyond.

The Kingwood Mustangs turned heads in 2024 with a 9-5 finish, making a deep run to the Regional Finals before being stopped by district rival Summer Creek. It was a breakout campaign for Coach Cale Melton and his squad—and the excitement around the program is very real. Leading the charge into 2025 is District Newcomer of the Year Landon Hinson, who returns at quarterback with poise and upside. He’ll be handing off to explosive running back Cam Richardson, who will be running behind one of the best in the business—national recruit Kennedy Brown, the anchor of a formidable offensive line. On the outside, Trysten Laughlin and Kye Wheby give Hinson reliable and athletic targets to stretch the field and make plays downfield. Defensively, Cade Haug is the tone-setter—a tackling machine at linebacker—while Brayden Ferdows will provide key support in the middle of the defense. The biggest challenge for the Mustangs? Replacing a large and talented senior class. Building depth will be critical if Kingwood wants to keep trending upward in a tough district. But with the returning talent and momentum from last year’s playoff run, Kingwood looks like a program built to last.

The Cory Laxen-era begins at C.E. King with excitement and high expectations. Laxen, a four-time state champion during his time at North Shore, now takes the reins of a Panthers program he’s already deeply familiar with as a former assistant. And while it’s the start of a new chapter, the mission remains the same: build a contender—and fast. There’s plenty of young talent to work with. The quarterback battle between Jeffery Randle and Timothy Potts will be one to watch this fall, while the backfield is already loaded with Stephen F. Austin commit Dionne Sims and Antwon Sanders, both capable of breaking off big plays. Then there's sophomore phenom Dillon Mitchell, whose jaw-dropping track speed has quickly made him one of the most exciting athletes in the area. Up front, the offensive line will be powered by Oswald Jacquet III and Xavier Goode, giving the Panthers stability in the trenches. Out wide, the weapons are dangerous—Braylon Lane (a national recruit), Le’Jerric Clark, and Caleb Martin all have the ability to stretch defenses and make plays. Defensively, Dominick Toulon will bring pressure in the trenches, while the linebacker group features James Jordan and Calvin Carter, a nationally ranked Dekaney move-in with sideline-to-sideline range. In the secondary, Enoch Bell will be the enforcer on the back end. It’s a youth movement at C.E. King—but with talent like this, the Panthers could be back in the postseason mix sooner than expected.

In one of the toughest districts in Texas, Humble, Channelview, and Goose Creek Memorial are grinding to make noise and build momentum. At Humble High, head coach Robert Murphy looks to build on a 5-5 campaign (2-5 in district) with a defense-first mindset. The Wildcats return a solid core on that side of the ball and will aim to turn close games into wins in 2025. Over in Channelview, head coach Averion Hurts leans on a pair of proven playmakers: running back Jaydien Johnson and wide receiver Davion Vanderbilt, who both had big seasons in 2024 and bring firepower to the Falcons’ offensive attack. Meanwhile, Goose Creek Memorial welcomes Jay’Mond Cleveland as its new head coach. The Baytown native and former Lee High School star returns home, energized and ready to spark a turnaround. Cleveland inherits a hungry team, eager to get into the win column and rewrite the narrative.

Pearland Oilers

...

After storming through district play with an unblemished 8-0 record and clinching their fourth consecutive title, the Shadow Creek Sharks concluded the season at 9-2 – though a stunning 31-28 playoff loss to Fort Bend Elkins brought their postseason to an abrupt end. Second-year head coach Tyrone Green will look to harness that disappointment as motivation for a team still seeking its first state championship since 2019. Shadow Creek’s offense returns plenty of firepower, led by senior wideout Chris Stewart – last season’s 22-6A Offensive MVP and a Texas-commit – who racked up 922 receiving yards and 18 total touchdowns. Junior RB Tristan Willis, the district’s Offensive Newcomer of the Year, added nearly 1,000 all-purpose yards and 14 scores, while Houston-bound junior receiver Aden Starling is back after a brief transfer with Iowa Colony. Sophomore WR Jaylen Addai, the son of former NFL running back Joseph Addai, brings elite pedigree and early D1 attention. On the line, junior Demarcus West is expected to step into a bigger role. Defensively, the Sharks are anchored by senior linebacker and reigning Defensive MVP Giavani “Tommy” Baker. The front seven features proven talents like Deneim Scott and Nathan Harris, while the secondary is headlined by Utah-commit Carter Stewart (first-team, all-district) and rising junior Kevin Jackson—a versatile athlete with offers from several Power 5 programs. Additionally, second-teamer and three-star collegiate prospect Brandon Sherrard (Jr. DB) provides considerable coverage from the cornerback position. With veteran leadership, high-end skill talent, and playoff motivation, the Sharks are poised to make another deep run—this time with their eyes firmly set on reclaiming the state crown.

...

Expectations remain high in Pearland as the Oilers return a veteran-heavy lineup with both production and athleticism. After finishing 9-3 last fall and pushing into the 6A-D1 Area Round, head coach B.J. Gotte enters his fourth season with a team that looks primed to take the next step. Senior signal-caller Jake Westmoreland (first-team, all-district) leads the charge after a sharp junior season where he threw for over 1,600 yards and 21 touchdowns with just two picks. His go-to target, senior Jordan “Jet” Hernandez, is back after lighting up defenses for 1,094 yards and 15 scores. Up front, three-star lineman Nicholas Howard (Pitt-commit) and junior Colby Rao form the foundation of a solid offensive line, while junior Ryan Miller could emerge as the next feature back in the wake of Tate Chisolm’s graduation. The defense, meanwhile, is stacked with next-level talent. Kansas-commit and first-team, all-district selection Joseph Credit (77 tackles, 9 TFL, 5 sacks) anchors the linebacker corps, flanked by Illinois-bound pass rusher Jaylen Stewart (first-team). Safety Zeke Alkire (Air Force), another first-teamer, adds stability on the back end, while junior DE DeMarco Jenkins (Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year), senior Amari Wilks (LA Tech), and LB Anthony DeLeon round out a deep, experienced unit.

...

There’s no rebuilding at Manvel – just reloading. Coming off a 6-6 season capped by a playoff win over Hightower, the Mavericks retain a dynamic core with the tools to raise their ceiling this fall. Senior QB Camren Renfro (second-team, all-district) is back to command the offense after throwing for over 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns, while adding nine more scores with his legs. His chemistry with senior wideout Antoine Wilder (first-team) gives Manvel a dangerous duo in the passing game. The backfield will feature junior up-and-comer Xaiden Brown – who is expected to have an even bigger year, following a season that saw him rack up nearly 700 all-purpose yards and nine total touchdowns – alongside veteran tailback Eric Mosley III, who transferred from Iowa Colony. Up front, senior OL Paulo Camacho adds a veteran presence in the trenches. The defense may be comparatively young, but it’s headlined by top-end talent. Junior cornerback Karnell “Greedy” James Jr. enters the spotlight as a three-star recruit with Power 5 offers from programs like Texas, Cal, and TCU. Linebacker Samuel Weary, also a junior, brings energy and upside to the middle of the defense. With a mix of established leaders and emerging stars, Manvel enters the season hungry to prove they belong among the region’s top contenders. If the Mavs can build off last year’s foundation, expect a deeper postseason push.

...

Dawson enters 2025 with fresh leadership and a relatively balanced array of players aiming to push past last year’s 6-4 finish. New head coach Jaybo Shaw, hired in December 2024, inherits a team eager to return to playoff contention after narrowly missing out in 2024. On offense, Luke Brown (Sr. QB) steps into the starting role following the graduation of standout Max Zavala. Brown will be supported by a sturdy offensive line anchored by junior Carter Ceasar, a second-team, all-district selection, and senior Taryn Hill. Versatile junior Corey Brown (22-6A Utility Player of the Year) and senior Josiah McFarland add dynamic playmaking ability as two-way athletes. The Eagles’ defense features senior leaders across the board, including outside linebacker Kingston Ephriam, who earned an all-district honorable mention, MLB James Higgins, and safety Bryson Flynn. The combined experience and leadership will be critical if Dawson wishes to establish themselves on either side of the ball.

...

The Dobie Longhorns, under second-year head coach Daniel Fitzmorris, approach the new campaign in hopes of returning to playoff form following a 6-5 result last season. After capturing the district title in 2023, Dobie reached the postseason but saw their run cut short in the Bi-District round against Ridge Point. Losing star tailback and two-time District MVP Cam Matthews (Memphis) to graduation leaves a significant hole in the backfield. However, Dobie’s offense still features some notable returning talent, including senior guard Camron Robertson, a first-team, all-district pick, and junior center Alonzo Chapman, who earned second-team honors. Additionally, senior Damarcus Hodges is poised for a breakout year as the likely lead back. On the defensive side, the Longhorns will lean heavily on senior OLB Desmond Talib, another first-team, all-district standout.

...

Progress may not always show up in the win column, but South Houston heads into this fall with reasons for optimism. After winding up with a 3-7 record last season, the Trojans return a handful of key weapons who could accelerate their climb under head coach Patrick Longstreet. Junior quarterback Keke Baker is back under center after earning second-team, all-district honors, offering stability and playmaking potential on offense. Senior Tyren Brewster adds versatility across the board—primarily in the secondary, but capable of lining up anywhere when needed. Defensively, junior lineman Xavier Muhammad headlines the group as a rare talent. The four-star recruit and multi-sport standout was named District 22-6A Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year and has already drawn offers from notable D1 collegiate programs such as Iowa, TCU, Rice, Houston, and SMU.

...

Following a 3-7 outing in 2024, Pasadena Memorial returns a strong group of impact players as coach Jamie Crocker enters a pivotal season. The most noteworthy, of which, is standout offensive lineman Devan Robison, a three-star senior with offers from programs like Oklahoma, Houston, Stanford, and Baylor, and Ole Miss. He’ll help protect senior QB Logan Johnson, who earned second-team, all-district honors. Furthermore, junior receiver Landon Johnson adds a dependable target, while senior linebacker Arturo Aguilera brings leadership on defense.

...

Alvin looks to turn the page in 2025 with new head coach Matthew Bass taking the reins of the program, in hopes of rebuilding momentum after a 3-7 finish last fall. While the Longhorns face a tough climb in 22-6A, a few key returners provide some stability through the transition. Senior center Jacob Baez, a first-team, all-district selection, anchors the offensive line alongside junior Jacobi Small. On special teams, senior kicker Enrique Garza should continue to be a reliable presence as Alvin looks to take a step forward under new leadership.

...

After back-to-back winless district slates, Sam Rayburn sets their sights on turning the tide. Led by fourth-year coach Sergio Gonzalez, the Texans bring back a solid mix of senior vets and promising juniors, including dynamic athlete H’Rei Jones and fullback Ruben Vasquez – both second-team, all-district selections. Quarterback Malachi Rivas and lineman Cristian Mendez add experience on offense, while juniors Juelz Byrd-Acuna and Julian Montelongo bulk up the defensive trenches. Additionally, Coen Holliday and Josiah Vela are both proven contributors in the Rayburn secondary.

Fresh Faces: Hutto’s Eli Reinhart set to lead hungry Hippos

Merle Bertrand
08 Aug, 2025

New Hutto Head Coach Eli Reinhart has seen the Promised Land.

As the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for North Crowley in the DFW area, Reinhart helped lead the powerful Panthers to a 42-2 overall record over the past three years; a run that included an undefeated 16-0 season last year and a 6A Division state championship wipeout of Westlake. That impressive run caught the attention of Hutto Athletic Director Will Compton, who led the Hippos last season and helped bring Reinhart back to the Austin area after assuming the AD position at Hutto.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Reinhart grew up in Montrose, Michigan where he played high school ball at Montrose High School for his dad, Dennis Reinhart. He went on to play wide receiver at Concordia University of Ann Arbor, then transferred to Saginaw Valley State University where he also played baseball.

After his playing days ended, Reinhart served for five years as the offensive coordinator for his dad at Montrose while he finished his undergraduate studies. College stints soon followed, as he coached wide receivers at Ferris State University then became the offensive coordinator at Saginaw Valley State University at the ripe old age of 24. Additional stops at Northwood University and Central Michigan University rounded out his time at the collegiate level.

Reinhart moved to Texas and became Anderson’s offensive coordinator in 2021 where, in a preview of things to come, his Trojans averaged just under 34 points per game. Following a wholesale coaching staff change at Anderson, the well-travelled Reinhart landed at North Crowley. After averaging 40.5 points-per-game in 2022, the Panthers’ scoring numbers spiked to 52.5 and 53.7 PPG the last two seasons.

While those numbers and last year’s state title undoubtedly piqued Compton’s attention, there were off the field factors at play when Reinhart decided to return to the Austin area, this time as the top guy.

“The things that attracted me the most to Hutto started with our leadership in the district. Our Superintendent, Jeni Neatherlin, played a huge role in my interest for this job,” Reinhart declares. “I wanted to be somewhere that valued athletics as part of the educational process for young student athletes and understood the importance it plays in so many kids' lives.

“After that I, was really excited to be in a one horse or smaller school district where the community really rallies around the athletic programs.”

Despite plans for a second Hutto ISD high school, the community still lives for its Hippos as evidenced by the massive and ongoing Hutto High School renovation program -- and is eager to see if Reinhart can guide the Hippos into the ranks of the area’s elite programs.

With redistricting on the horizon for 2026, Reinhart’s Hippo squad will compete this year in a deep and crowded nine-team District 25-6A that includes not only defending 6A DII champion Vandegrift, but seven other tough teams that are capable of winning on any given night.

Reinhart is well aware of the hornets nest he’s stepping into.

“My expectations this year are to compete and get better every single week and every time we have a chance to step on the field. This year lays the groundwork and the foundation for what is to come with this program,” he states pragmatically.

“I want Hutto to be one of the top programs in Central Texas and eventually the state. This is going to take a lot of hard work and dedication, but we have the kids to make it happen.”
