There are lots of distractions this time of year. High school football playoffs, of course, are in full swing, with the college and NFL playoff chases heating up. With Thanksgiving in the rear-view mirror, the holiday season is also upon us. So maybe you haven’t noticed that the 2025-26 basketball season has been underway for several weeks already. But that’s what we’re here for; to get you caught up on the season so far and to take a look ahead.
It’s already clear that District 25-6A is going to be an Austin area power center this year. As of this writing, seven of the district’s nine teams are .500 or above heading into this weekend’s tournament play. Of those seven, Round Rock and Westwood once again appear to be title contenders, joined by improved Vandegrift, Vista Ridge and McNeil squads. After posting three consecutive 30+ win seasons, a young Stony Point squad will likely be rebuilding this year.
Across the Bi-district divide, Bowie is off to a fast start while Westlake and Lake Travis also figure to be in the 26-6A title chase.
East View has emerged as the early favorite in District 23-5A, especially as Hendrickson is the only other team at the .500 mark in the early going. On a similar note, all of the District 24-5A teams are below .500. Anderson and McCallum have historically been the strongest of that bunch and it wouldn’t be a surprise if that’s the case again this season.
Like their 6A counterparts, the teams in District 25-5A seem destined to engage in their annual demolition derby. Lockhart, Hays and Liberty Hill are off to decent starts, but don’t rule out the Leander Posse, (Cedar Park, Glenn, Leander and/or Rouse.)
4A squads Austin Achieve, Burnet and Lampasas are off to quick starts, so we’ll keep an eye on them as well.
Look for our first Power Rankings of the year next week after most teams have completed another round of tournament play this weekend.
