Trenton Reynolds has led Antonian College Preparatory to a lot of athletic success over the past four years. The soon-to-be graduate has helped the Apaches win multiple cross country state championships, and enjoyed baseball success as well.
"Cross country is a sport that you have to be extremely mentally tough [in] because there is no quitting, no matter how hard the race gets," said Reynolds. "Over my high school career, one of my greatest accomplishments would be winning four consecutive state championships, which is something I think a very small number of people have ever accomplished in any sport."
Reynolds was a strong runner throughout his cross country career, and heated up late in his baseball career, so he earned a first-team all-state honor for both sports during the 2017-2018 school year.
"After my sophomore year in 2017, we lost a lot [of] depth to our pitching staff, so I knew that, if I worked hard over the summer and in the offseason, I had a chance to be one of our best returning arms in 2018," he said.
"During the offseason, I focused on understanding each of [the] pitches and how they could be most effective," he continued. "In order to [do] that, I needed to be able to repeat my mechanics, pitch after pitch. One of the most important things for me was to also be able to throw any of my pitches in any count for a strike."
His work, study and 2018 breakout baseball season came at a good time because he and his teammates marched Antonian to the 2018 TAPPS Division I regional final.
"Fortunately in 2018, I was able to have a defense that I was very confident having behind me to make plays, and I had an offense that would compete in every game."
Reynolds knew he and Antonian had momentum going into the 2019 season, so he's been setting the Apaches up for more success.
"I’ve been working to try and develop a better changeup that has both lateral and vertical movement to be able to compete against both right and left-handed hitters, and keep them off balance," he said.
Reynolds is wrapping up his high school career, but don't expect his love for sports to stop at graduation.
"I enjoy doing anything outdoors, including spending hours on the lake, whether it be wakeboard or jet skiing during the weekends."
