In the opening week of the 2019 Texas high school football season, Aldine ISD programs went 2-3 with wins coming from MacArthur and Nimitz.
So, what does Week 2 hold?
Here are some quick game previews for this week's showdowns.
Conroe (0-1) at Aldine Davis (0-1) – Thursday at 7 p.m.
Aldine Davis is coming off a close loss to College Park. The Falcons fell to the Cavaliers 31-24 in the season opener. Davis did manage to put up 366 yards of offense in the game. The biggest issue for Davis in the game was holding on to the football, fumbling four times and losing two. On the bright side, Demarcus Barlow started off his trek for 1,000 yards with a bang. The senior carried the ball 24 times for 126 yards and a score. Jah'Rell Stevens looked really good at quarterback for the Falcons. Stevens went 14 for 16 for 146 yards. The top receiver for Davis was JJ Clebourne with five grabs for 41 yards. If Stevens can turn some of those throws into touchdowns, Davis will be churning towards a win. A player to watch for Conroe is Christian Pack, who went 14 for 23 for 220 yards and two touchdowns.
Aldine (0-1) at Humble (1-0) – Saturday at 6 p.m.
Aldine is coming off a 55-6 loss to Cy Falls in the opening week. The Mustangs will try and right the ship in week two with a road test at Humble. Aldine will have to produce more offense after putting up just 179 yards a week ago. Sophomore running back Elijah Teamer got 23 carries last week and went for 73 yards. Junior quarterback Johnny Toups went 12 for 23 for 120 yards, one interception and one touchdown. Junior Ja'Kobi Terry finished with six catches for 57 yards. Humble is coming off a 56-6 win against Northbrook. Zaveri Harris led the Wildcats' rushing attack with nine carries for 67 yards and a score.
Eisenhower (0-1) at Channelview (0-1) – Friday, 7 p.m.
Eisenhower is coming off a 32-9 loss to Fort Bend Marshall. Sevan Guidry started his senior year with 18 carries for 66 yards. Christian Sims will have to step it up at quarterback after going 8 for 15 for 62 yards and one interception and JaMarcus Martin had five grabs for 41 yards. This offense has a lot of returning starters from 2018, they just need to get rolling. Channelview is coming off a 21-17 loss to Nimitz. Quarterback Demetrius Charles had a nice opener going 14 for 24 for 120 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Charles is a player to watch.
Nimitz (1-0) vs Baytown Sterling (0-1), Friday, 7 p.m.
Nimitz is coming off a 21-17 victory over Channelview. The Cougars' standout running back Jayvon Davis got off to another good start. After leading the district with more than 1,800 yards a year ago, Davis rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns in the opener. Davis is the straw that stirs the drink for Nimitz's offense. Austin Remo started the year 7 for 15 for 71 yards and an interception. Baytown Sterling is coming off a 28-13 loss to Clear Creek. EJ Hawkins was Mr. Do-It-All for Sterling with 11 carries for 63 yards and three receptions for 77 yards and a score.
MacArthur (1-0) vs College Park (1-0) – Saturday, 6 p.m.
This is the battle of the unbeatens. MacArthur could better its 2018-win total with a victory on Saturday after going 1-9 a year ago. Darius Gatson rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries in the opener. Taylor Eaton led the receiving corps with five catches for 124 yards and a score.
