SEEING BOTH SIDES: Moya Adds Another Dimension to the Mustangs

AS ONE OF ALDINE’S STANDOUT ATHLETES, RIGOBERTO MOYA KNOWS THAT BEING A DIFFERENCE-MAKER DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN HAVING ONE DEFINED ROLE.

Sometimes, it means being ready for whatever comes next. Now in the midst of his senior season, Moya has become a resourceful presence for the Mustangs, typically patrolling the secondary at safety or cornerback while also stepping in at wide receiver when needed.

“Personally, I feel like it not only shows my versatility, but also my willingness to learn,” Moya said. “I love the game, so I’ve always looked at it as, ‘Whatever keeps me on the field, whatever I need to learn, I’ll do it.’”

Adaptability has undoubtedly become a defining part of Moya’s game.

Playing both sides of the ball has also given him a unique perspective when he steps onto the field. The more he understands one position, the more he can use that knowledge against it when he lines up elsewhere.

“My ability to read and react has definitely become an asset to me,” he said. “If I’m at wide receiver or defensive back, I’m basically playing myself from the other side of the ball. So, it’s honestly a pretty cool way to look at the game. Plus, it’s really helped with my instincts in game situations.”

For Moya, football has always been about more than simply what happens between the lines. His family grew up around the sport, giving him an early connection to the game before he eventually made the transition from basketball to football in middle school.

Along the way, Moya has also learned how to navigate the difficult moments that come with playing for a program still searching for its next breakthrough.

Several weeks into the fall, Moya has already seen the difference first-year head coach Charles Brown III has made inside the Aldine locker room.

“Coach Brown definitely brought in a new attitude, and I think the morale has improved because of it,” Moya said. “Everybody’s been lifted up, and the way he approaches each practice and game is very straightforward and direct. No matter what happens as the season goes on, we just have to live up to the standard.”

That standard also extends to how Moya handles adversity and the way he has managed to turn difficult results into something constructive.

“After each game, my dad and I break down what worked for me, what I could’ve done better to help the team, and what we can learn from it moving forward,” Moya said. “It’s all part of the learning experience, and the losses can be hard to take. But if you love the grind, you keep going because it makes you appreciate the wins when they come.”

Perhaps nothing captures Moya’s approach better: stay ready, stay adaptable, and keep pushing forward.

For a player willing to do whatever it takes to stay on the field, there’s always another challenge to embrace — and another opportunity waiting.
