Friday Night Lights Presented by T-Mobile: Lufkin takes show on road to Tomball

Here comes Lufkin!

The top team in District 8-5A-DI rolls into Tomball on Friday night to try and preserve its undefeated record in district play to keep pace with what has been an impressive Magnolia West squad. By the way, Lufkin hosts Magnolia West next week with the district championship on the line.

But as any good coach will tell you, Lufkin is surely not looking past Tomball to Magnolia West.

So, let's break it down.

Tomball comes into this showdown - set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday night - with a 3-3 overall record and 2-1 mark in district play. With as tight as the district race is right now, this is a huge game for Tomball.

The Cougars' offense has been second-best in the district, averaging 408.2 yards per game, while its defense is ranked second, just behind Lufkin, giving up an average of 289.8 yards per game.

Hunter Dunn pilots the Cougars' offense at quarterback. Dunn is 75 of 132 for 1,170 yards, 15 touchdowns and one interception. Dunn currently has the fourth-most yards by a quarterback in the district. Also, watch out for Jermaine Mayes at running back for the Cougars, who has rushed for 560 yards and four scores this year.

Now, for Lufkin.

It is the Jordan Moore and Ja'Lynn Polk show. That due has been dynamic in district play, connecting 41 times for 705 yards and three scores.

Moore enters Week 8 as the second-best quarterback by yardage in the district with 1,460 yards, only 22 yards behind Magnolia West's Tristian Brady. Moore has completed 68 percent of his passes this year and thrown 10 touchdowns.

This will be an interesting matchup because this will be one of the better defensive units Lufkin has seen in the past few weeks in facing the third, fourth and eighth-ranked defenses in district in that span.
