San Elizario (17-4-3) and Midlothian Heritage (25-7-1) played a defensive battle in Friday's UIL 4A boys soccer final at Georgetown ISD's Birkelbach Field, but San Elizario ultimately prevailed 1-0.
"What a great opponent for us today," said San Elizario coach Max Sappenfield. "I feel for those kids because I know this is not easy."
San Elizario attempted seven shots in the first half and Midlothian Heritage had three, but neither could punch the ball past respective goalkeepers Konnor Koethe and Steve Salais.
Koethe finished regulation with seven saves, but couldn't continue his dominance in the first overtime period. He saved Jonathan Carrillo's attempt, but VYPE Player of the Game Victor Unzueta immediately answered with a goal at the 86:38 mark of the match.
"We have to keep calm," Unzueta said of the pre-overtime plan. "We just took it in and we made it possible."
