VYPE DFW 411: Jake Skellenger

Recently, Jake Skellenger won the VYPE DFW Public School Baseball Player of the Year Fan Poll presented by Sun & Ski Sports. With such a successful high school career, it's clear that Skellenger made plenty of fans along the way who believed he more than deserved the title. VYPE DFW was given the opportunity to catch up with Skellenger regarding his win.

VYPE: How long have you been playing baseball and when did you get your start?

Skellenger: I've been playing baseball since I was three years old and I just fell more in love with the game as the years went on.

VYPE: Who is your favorite pro athlete? Why?
Skellenger: Clayton Kershaw because he never fails to put his faith first and his curveball is absolutely disgusting.

VYPE: Go-to pregame mea? Routine?
Skellenger: I always eat a Subway footlong and a Reign energy drink. Then I show up to the field three hours before the game to do my stretching/mobility work and spend some time with God before I go play.

VYPE: Favorite subject in school?
Skellenger: Lunch.

VYPE: Off the field, what's your favorite thing to do?
Skellenger: Outside of baseball, I like to spend one on one time with God. I like hunting/fishing. I enjoy seeing God throughout nature.

VYPE: What has been your greatest high school memory?
Skellenger: Favorite moment would be scoring the walk off run against Van High School in game three of the playoffs, but I'll always cherish the time spent with my teammates off the field.

VYPE: Are you playing in college? If so, what made you choose that program?
Skellenger: I decided to play for LeTourneau University because I felt God pushing me to play there and it's somewhere that I will not only just grow as a baseball player, but also grow in my faith.

VYPE: What do you plan on majoring in in college?
Skellenger: I plan on majoring in criminal justice to become a game warden once my baseball career is over.

Coach's Comments:

VYPE DFW was also given the opportunity to catch up with Skellenger's high school coach, Coach Jacob Cockrum. Cockrum had only great things to say about Skellenger from his time with the team: "Jake was a great teammate, always willing to do whatever it took to help his team win. He battled back from two major injuries to be able to play his senior season. He had a great year at the plate and on the mound."
