Belton High School is getting another experienced coach.
A few weeks ago, Brett Sniffin left Ridge Point after eight seasons to become Belton's new head coach. Sniffin has added to his staff, hiring Kingwood's Barry Campbell on Friday to fill one of his open coordinator positions.
"I've known Coach Brett Sniffin for a while, we worked together over at Clements," Campbell said. "We had some successful years over there. He's been over at Ridge Point the past few years and we've played each other and have remained in contact. He got the job, we got to talking about what he has available and what's he's looking for. Talking about those things it sounded like something I'd be interested in, even though it wasn't a head coaching job. As we got going on things, it just looked like something that would be a good fit for us."
Campbell leaves Kingwood after eight seasons of leading the Mustangs.
In that time, Campbell posted a 44-44 overall record as a head coach, leading the Mustangs to the playoffs six times, with their best records being 7-4 on two occasions.
"I'm just thankful for the opportunity to work here, the support we've gotten from our administration, parents and community," Campbell said. "Also thankful to be able to work with the kids that have come through Kingwood high school."
Campbell is excited about heading to Belton, which offers a smaller school district and community.
"I've never lived in an area like that," Campbell said. "From the outside looking in, it's something that appeared as a positive deal for our family. Talking through all of this, it became pretty clear in the past few weeks that it was something that would be good for our family."
Moving for a job is nothing new for Campbell.
As the son of a coach he did it a few times when he was growing up. But Kingwood was a special place to the Campbells. It was the place they have spent 13 years in and will always be special to them even as they move away.
"I've never lived anywhere for as long as I've lived in Kingwood," Campbell said. "Kingwood is home to me. This is my home. This is where I've grown up in my professional career. A lot of my ideals and perspectives as a coach were established here in Kingwood and Humble ISD. It will always be considered home to me. Absolutely a remarkable place to live. Can't say enough about the type of people that live here and the support that we've gotten over the years for me and my family and our program."
