ATX/SA Schools Face New UIL Challenges After 2020-2022 Enrollments Announced

The UIL announced the updated enrollments for its member schools on Tuesday, so it took another step towards the highly-anticipated 2020-2022 alignment. Check out four notable changes in the Austin/San Antonio area.

Northside ISD expands presence in UIL 6A: How will the UIL handle San Antonio Harlan's move from UIL 5A Division I to the state's highest classification? Generally, the most schools you'll see in a UIL district is 10, but there have been a couple instances where 11 campuses have teamed up. In a football scenario where all 11 Northside ISD football-playing schools are placed in the same UIL district, all 10 regular season games would count in the district standings and teams would not schedule non-district competition. But, the UIL could also keep most of Northside together, and send two or three of the district's eastern campuses to a UIL district with the seven North East ISD schools.

Pflugerville ISD prepares for reunion: Pflugerville Hendrickson will join district mates Pflugerville, Pflugerville Connally and Pflugerville Weiss in UIL 5A non-football competition after it departed from UIL 6A. For football, Pflugerville, Pflugerville Hendrickson and Pflugerville Weiss are expected to be in the same UIL 5A Division I district, while Pflugerville Connally drops from UIL 5A Division I to UIL 5A Division II.

Comal ISD football teams find trio of homes: Smithson Valley stays in UIL 6A, but longtime rival New Braunfels Canyon drops to UIL 5A Division I. Canyon Lake remains in UIL 4A Division I, but should face new Comal ISD school San Antonio Davenport in UIL 4A non-football competition during the 2020-2022 UIL alignment. San Antonio Davenport is scheduled to open its doors for the 2020-2021 school year, but will have to wait til the 2022-2024 UIL alignment to join a UIL varsity football district.

San Antonio Wagner andLiberty Hill show range: San Antonio Wagner football spent the last two years in UIL 5A Division I, but will reunite with Judson ISD rival Converse Judson in a UIL 6A district over the next two years. Meanwhile, Liberty Hill continues to be affected by Williamson County growth and now has to make the move from UIL 4A to UIL 5A. Its football alignment move will be UIL 4A Division I to UIL 5A Division II.
