OFF THE DRIBBLE: The All-VYPE preseason girls basketball teams
OVER THE PAST FEW SEASONS, IT’S BECOME CLEAR THAT GIRLS BASKETBALL STANDS AMONG THE GRITTIEST ARENAS IN HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.
LAST MARCH’S STATE TITLE THRILLER — CAPPED BY SUMMER CREEK’S COMEBACK VICTORY — ONLY REINFORCED THAT TRUTH.
BEYOND THE SCOREBOARD, THOUGH, THE SPORT CONTINUES TO BE DEFINED BY THE PERSONALITIES DRIVING IT FORWARD — ATHLETES WHO REPRESENT NOT JUST THEMSELVES, BUT THE COMMUNITIES THAT SHAPED THEM.
AS ANOTHER CAMPAIGN APPROACHES, WE SPOTLIGHT THE NAMES AND PROGRAMS SETTING THE STANDARD IN H-TOWN HOOPS.
HERE ARE THE CAN'T MISS KIDS IN H-TOWN.

Roberts, Watson headline No. 12 Iowa Colony as they move to Class 5A
No. 12 — IOWA COLONY PIONEERS
Iowa Colony, under third-year coach Brandi Justice, has already made some noise. Last year, the Pioneers went an impressive 26-9 overall and 12-0 in district play.
Iowa Colony returns four starters off that team which will seek a third- straight playoff trip in 2025 as they move up to Class 5A. Sophomore Eryn Roberts averaged 12 points and five steals per game as a freshman in 26 games played. Roberts earned District 24-4A Newcomer of the Year. She was also named TABC All-Region and holds one offer from Lamar University.
Junior Payton Watson was named the 26-4A Utility Player of the Year. Others to watch include seniors Aaliiyah Rogers and Kenadie Francis.
The key to success for Justice’s squad is to play “Iowa Colony Basketball” -- trusting each other for 32 minutes.
