HOUSTON - In the house that JJ Watt is notorious for batting down opposing quarterback passes, Cypress Creek's Byron Blassingame joined his company.
Against Strake Jesuit in the Regional Semifinals, with 2:22 remaining in the game, Blassingame came around the end of the line. The senior defensive end, put up his hand as Strake Jesuit's William Dickason fired off a pass.
Impact.
The ball soared straight up into the air and right back down into Blassingame's hands. A few steps later, Blassingame was in the endzone with his teammates celebrating the now-interception return for a touchdown inside NRG Stadium.
"I thought it was going in the endzone," Blassingame said. "I just fell through it and I caught it and scored."
The pick six might have been the highlight of the game for Blassingame but wasn't the only thing he did. Blassingame racked up an impressive 14 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and the interception.
"It was an honor," Blassingame said. "I have to thank my entire team because without them I wouldn't have been as successful like I was."
Cypress Creek advances to the Regional Finals to face Katy Taylor for a spot in the State Semifinals. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday inside NRG Stadium.
