With the UIL State baseball season drawing to a close this past weekend, the 2018-19 athletic calendar officially came to a close, and the 2018-19 calendar wasn't without some pretty awe-inspiring or surprising moments.
Over the course of the next few weeks as we enter into the summer lull and anxiously await for the 2019-20 athletic calendar to begin, we're going to take a look back at the most memorable moments or storylines of the year – going in reverse order (10 to 1).
To lead things off, we'll start with No. 10:
Flower Mound Volleyball's Run to State
With two consecutive Bi-District exits, Flower Mound made a coaching change bringing in Jamie Siegel as its head coach, prying her from Keller after four years. Siegel brought in 10 years of experience where every team she had coach previously made the playoffs. Siegel also owned a 292-105 career coaching record.
With a new vision guiding the program, Flower Mound excelled and got on a roll early on by winning its first eight matches – only losing three sets during that stretch. There was a bit of a lull during the pre-district schedule, but Flower Mound entered the district portion of its schedule at a stout 22-6 record.
Flower Mound opened district play 4-0 before falling in five sets to Coppell on September 21, which put it 26-7. That would be the last time Flower Mound would lose.
Flower Mound finished district play winning its last nine matches to finish with a 13-1 record and an outright District 6-6A title. That was just the beginning.
After ending the regular season with a 3-2 win over Aledo to extend its winning streak to 10, Flower Mound opened the first two rounds of the playoffs with 3-0 sweeps to advance to the Regional Quarterfinals – the furthest the program had been since reaching the Regional Quarterfinals in 2013.
Flower Mound won 3-2 in a closely-contest match with Byron Nelson – a USAToday Super 25 nationally-ranked team – to advance to the Regional Semifinals to face El Paso Coronado. Flower Mound won that matchup 3-1, setting up bout with another nationally-ranked team – Southlake Carroll – in the 6A Region I Finals.
Carroll won the opening set but Flower Mound rallied to win the next three to extend its Cinderella season and earn the program's first-ever State Tournament berth.
There, Flower Mound continued its solid play with a 3-1 win over San Antonio O'Connor in the State Semifinals and 3-1 win over a Fort Bend Ridge Point team that had a three Division I signees.
Flower Mound, having never made a state tournament, finished the year with 42 wins, a 6-6A crown, a regional championship and a State title.
