How to treat the Bye Week.
That’s always tricky this time of year. If one team has a Bye while a team a spot or two behind them wins big, does Team 2 leapfrog Team 1? As is usually the case at this point in the season, that dilemma cropped up several times this past week. And as is usually the case, it’s hard to ignore impressive performances by the chasing team.
For starters, Westlake gets rewarded with a new #1 ranking for their impressive win over a good Round Rock squad. The Chaps slip past Lake Travis – with the caveat that they still must face the Cavs, and undefeated Cedar Ridge also remains on their schedule.
Hutto cracked 60 points for the second straight week to move all the way up to #3 with Round slipping one spot to #4 and Weiss dropping to #5 after their Bye.
Hutto’s surge means Dripping Springs settles at #6, just ahead of Vandegrift, Cedar Park and Anderson who all won to stay put in the Rankings. Cedar Ridge’s new Top 10 ranking – again overtaking an idle team in Bowie – will immediately be put to the test against Lake Travis on Friday (10/9).
Though Bowie slipped back to #11, it won’t take much for them to move back inside the Top 10. The Bulldogs also gained some separation on the teams behind them. Liberty Hill moved up to #12 even as they struggled to put away stubborn upstart Legacy Ranch while #13 Hays lost at home to unranked Austin High and #14 Rouse dropped a grudge match and a spot against #8 Cedar Park. Wimberley remained at #15 despite their Bye, if only because the teams behind them all struggled.
#16 Taylor and #17 Georgetown both lost with Lago Vista having the week off. Hendrickson edged out Lockhart after the latter’s decisive loss against Champion to close out the rankings.
Regents and St. Michael’s both won to remain atop the private school rankings. Since they won’t face each other in the playoffs, here’s hoping they stage a flag football game after the season for charity and bragging rights.
So, for this week, at least, teams with the Bye generally slipped a spot or two. The good news for them is they’ll have a chance to return the favor to the teams around them when it’s those teams’ turn for the week off.
