Kyron Drones' recruiting stock skyrocketing

HOUSTON - Kyron Drones didn't have one offer.

Before the junior quarterback led Shadow Creek to the program's first-ever Class 5A State Championship in December he didn't have one single official offer.

Since leading the Sharks to a 28-22 victory over Denton Ryan on December 20, the signal-caller has racked up 14 college football offers, including the most recent coming from Auburn and Northwestern.

"Kyron as a sophomore he played behind Jamarian [George], so he didn't have as much film and wasn't as wide-known coming into the season," Shadow Creek coach Brad Butler said. "At times looking around, seeing other people get recruited he was like 'Hey what's going on?'.

"He's done a great job at just keeping his head down, continuing to work and people are now realizing he's a special player. He's going to get plenty of opportunities moving forward."

Kyron finished the season passing for 3,390 yards, 46 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He completed 57 percent of his passes and rushed for another 825 yards and 18 touchdowns.

With his junior season in the books. Kyron Drones' first offer came - William & Mary offered on December 21.

Then came Illinois State University.

Then Prairie View A&M University.

Then came the first big one. The University of Houston - the same school his grandfather Jerry Drones starred at in the 1960s.

"It's going good, a bunch of coaches are talking to me," Kyron said about the process. "I'm just glad someone finally pulled the trigger."

Other notable offers to roll in include Utah State, Missouri, Arkansas - which just signed Fort Bend Marshall dual-threat QB Malik Hornsby - North Texas and Northwestern.

"I'm happy for him," Kyron's father Kevin, who coaches the defensive line at Shadow Creek, said. "It's a true testament to the work he has put in and the patience he has shown."

Drones is currently preparing this offseason to make the jump to Class 6A football, as Shadow Creek will be thrown into District 23-6A starting in Fall 2020.

"I'm just working on timing with new receivers and being more vocal to lead this team to state again," Drones said.
