THE BIG DANCE: Texans playing in March Madness

VYPE
Mar 17, 2021

March Madness is upon us! As we all know there was no NCAA Basketball Tournament last season, but the athletes have persevered and are ready to take part in the Big Dance. The state of Texas may be known for its football, but the basketball talent from the Lone Star State is second to none. Of the 68 teams competing in the tournament, there are 73 players who played high school ball and graduated in the state of Texas. VYPE wants to recognize these athletes for their accomplishments. Let the madness begin!

FEATURE: Sam Houston's Schmid ready for a playoff run, father Mark eager to watch

Joshua Koch
22 Apr, 2021

HOUSTON – The last time Eric Schmid ran out of the tunnel for a playoff game it was December 17, 2016.

The venue was AT&T Stadium. The opponent was Lake Travis led by Charlie Brewer (Utah). The game was the Class 6A Division I State Championship.

Fast forward four years, four months, and eight days (1,590 days total), and Schmid – who starred at The Woodlands High School – will once again run out of the tunnel for a playoff game on Saturday.

This time wearing the orange of Sam Houston.

"It's been a while," Schmid said with a laugh. "It's about time."

Track & Field: Oklahoma-signee Lueking flying high in 2021 for Clear Creek

Joshua Koch
22 Apr, 2021

HOUSTON - Olivia Lueking has done nothing but win.

The Clear Creek senior pole vaulter has won every meet she has pole-vaulted in this season raising her bar height from 13-feet-1 inch to open the season to career-best 14-feet-3 inches a few weeks ago, which is currently No. 1 in Texas and No. 4 in the United States.

At the District 23-24 Area Meet last week, Lueking cleared 13-feet-9 inches to punch her ticket to the Regional Track Meet. With a solid performance this week, the senior is looking to advance to the UIL State Track Meet for the second time in her career. As a sophomore, Lueking went and placed seventh.

The Oklahoma signee also has the opportunity to advance to state in the 300-meter hurdles this week as well after posting a personal-best 42.78 last week at the area meet. That is the ninth-fastest time in the United States and fourth-fastest in Texas. If she advances to state in the hurdles, it would be the first time.

VYPE caught up with Lueking at the VYPE Houston Track & Field Photoshoot back in March. Talked to her about her season, her signing to Oklahoma, and more.
