The West Brook Bruins are rolling into a bye week with C.E. King and Beaumont United in their crosshairs in the coming weeks. Quarterback Troy Yowman leads an offense that is ranked first in District 21-6A averaging 534 yards a game.
The senior Yowman has a lethal weapon in classmate Thaddeaus Johnson. The wide receiver leads the district with 21 receptions (328 yards, 2 TD's) while Yoman is on pace to possibly crack 3,000 yards passing this season.
"The offense is something we've been working on years here," said Eric Peevey, entering his third season as West Brook head coach.
"With all the 7on7 and everything else, Troy has always shown he can throw the ball well. The biggest thing about this year is we have multiple receivers that we can goto at any time."
Along with Johnson, the Bruin air assault also includes wide out seniors Jordan Babino (10, 131 yds, 2 TD's) and Joey Pierre (10, 276, 2 TD's) bringing the air corps to a total of six touchdowns in the first three games.
With solid victories over Bellaire (56-35) in week one and Strake Jesuit (61-21) in week two, West Brook passed a major test in week three over a rugged Lamar team (36-34).
"People don't give Lamar enough credit," said Peevey.
"You had a Westfield team that only scored 14 points, you had a Woodlands team that had a lot of turnover, offensively neither one of those teams could do anything. We were able to put up almost 500 yards of offense, Lamar is a loaded team."
The Bruins are in a stacked district with speedy Beaumont United, gritty C.E. King, a somewhat unpredictable Channelview squad and, of course, North Shore.
The marquee game of the season will be Friday, October 27 when North Shore visits West Brook for the likely district championship and #1 playoff seed. There are still games to play and injuries to avoid, but even Peevey can't help but notice the circle on the calendar.
"The game is going to be huge for the community," said Peevey.
"Coach (Jon) Kay is going to have his team ready to go 100% but we're focused right now on C.E. King."
