VYPE DFW: TXHSFB Top 5 Games to Watch Week 6
Oct 01, 2021
Just like that week six of Texas High School Football is upon us. We have already seen some of the greatest highs and lowest lows so far this season. VYPE DFW has some of the area's top games that you are not going to want to miss this week!
Rockwall (3-2) vs. Mesquite (3-2)

Rockwall vs. Mesquite -- Friday, October 1 at 7 p.m.

Rockwall Yellowjackets

The Rockwall Yellowjackets have been a strong force in the DFW area when it comes to high school football this season. Behind quarterback Braedyn Locke, the Yellowjackets have posted a 3-2 start to the season. Their first loss came in week 4 against a usual state championship contender Highland Park while their second loss came last week against a strong Rockwall-Heath team in what was arguably one of the best (if not the best ) DFW area games in high school football history.

Locke has thrown for nearly 1,600 yards in five games with 14 touchdowns and a 65% pass completion rating. Zach Hernandez has rushed for nearly 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns on 143 carries. Noble Johnson has caught 27 passes for 500 yards and six touchdowns while Caden Marshall has caught four touchdown passes for 512 yards. Not to be overlooked is Aiden Meeks (251 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Brennan Ray (296 yards, six touchdowns) who have both been strong forces this season for the Yellowjackets.

Mesquite Skeeters

The Skeeters opened the season with two losses. Week one's 30-14 loss against Flower Mound was followed by a 28-10 week two loss to South Grand Prairie. Every week since week two, though, Mesquite has focused all of their efforts into turning a new leaf and showing the strength on the field as they have defeated the likes of Grand Prairie, Arlington, and Skyline. Rockwall, though, just might be their toughest opponent so far this season.

Just as Rockwall has their not-so-secret weapons, Mesquite has their own in Jamarion Woods who has accounted for four touchdowns with 243 receiving yards on 15 catches. Not far behind him is Gervin McCarthy who has tallied 205 receiving yards and one touchdown on 12 catches. In the pocket making those throws is Chance Edwards who has a 60% pass completion rating with 649 passing yards and six passing touchdowns in five games. Anthony Roberts shouldn't be overlooked as the team's lead rusher with 348 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 70 carries.

What To Expect:

Both teams have a lot to lose here. On one hand, Rockwall wants to prove that their strong start wasn't a flike. On the other hand, Mesquite wants to prove that they should not be slept on this season. Can a two loss streak be enough to cause too much pressure on the shoulders of Locke? Will Mesquite have enough fight in them coming on a three game win streak high? Fans can expect nothing short of a physical game on Friday night that ultimately comes down to defense and communication.

Frisco Independence vs. Frisco Lone Star - Friday, September 17 at 7 pm

Frisco Independence is currently 1-1 on the season and will enter Friday's game coming off of a 32-19 loss to Wichita Falls Rider. The Knights are surely going to want to get back on track as they take on one of the best teams in the Metroplex. Led by senior quarterback Joe Veracruz who has accounted for 124 passing yardsand one passing touchdown this season, the Knights are certainly going to have to put in a lot of fight. On the ground, junior running back Ude Enyeribe has recorded 200 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries while senior running back and kicker Reggie Bush claims 155 rushing yards of his own and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Frisco Lone Star is 2-1 on the season with their only loss coming from a strong Aledo team- a game in which star quarterback Garret Rangel went down with an injury. Last week, the Rangers took the field against Frisco Heritage with junior quarterback Gabriel Barrientes in the pocket. Barrientes completed 61% of his passes with 200 passing yards and two passing touchdowns while senior wide receiver Ashton Jeanty led the charge on the ground with 140 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries during the 51-24 win over Frisco Heritage.

Fans can expect to see Lone Star as poised as ever as they come out and face off against Frisco ISD opponent Frisco Independence. The Rangers' offense is- and has continued to prove to be- one of the best in North Texas. We will see that Friday evening as they look to advance to a 2-1 record.
