Former VYPE cover boy, current Texas Longhorn Vernon Broughton honored as finalist for national scholar-athlete award

March 18, 2020—Recent Cypress Ridge High School graduate Vernon Broughton was honored as a finalist for the 29th Annual Franklin D. Watkins Award, which recognizes the nation's top African American male high school scholar-athlete through the National Alliance of African American Athletes. Broughton, an early Class of 2020 graduate already enrolled at the University of Texas, and the other five finalists were honored during a reception on March 14 in Arlington, Va.
"This year's 2020 Watkins Award features an incredible collection of fine student-athletes," said Everette Pearsall, the alliance's executive director. "Each of these young men is well equipped for success academically. We have continued to recognize and honor the premier African American Scholar-Athletes in the United States."

Finalists were chosen based on their unweighted grade point average, personal statements, extracurricular activities, community service and letters of recommendation. In addition, each excelled on the football field.
Broughton was named to the honor roll all four years at Cypress Ridge and a member of the National Honor Society. He volunteered at sports camps and served in various community youth leadership and ministry programs.
Broughton lettered in both football and basketball at Cypress Ridge. He became a national recruit in football and is rated among the top defensive lineman in the country for the Class of 2020. Broughton was selected for and participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy and Under Armour All-American Game.
All six finalists were given a red-carpet treatment and reception at the gala. Kourt Williams of St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif. was named the 2020 winner.
