"Each of these young men is well equipped for success academically. We have continued to recognize and honor the premier African American Scholar-Athletes in the United States."
Recent Cypress Ridge High School football standout Vernon Broughton, far right, was among six finalists for the 29th Annual Franklin D. Watkins Award, which honors the nation's top African American male high school scholar-athlete. The finalists were recognized at a reception and gala on March 14 in
Finalists were chosen based on their unweighted grade point average, personal statements, extracurricular activities, community service and letters of recommendation. In addition, each excelled on the football field.
Broughton was named to the honor roll all four years at Cypress Ridge and a member of the National Honor Society. He volunteered at sports camps and served in various community youth leadership and ministry programs.
Broughton lettered in both football and basketball at Cypress Ridge. He became a national recruit in football and is rated among the top defensive lineman in the country for the Class of 2020. Broughton was selected for and participated in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Academy and Under Armour All-American Game.
All six finalists were given a red-carpet treatment and reception at the gala. Kourt Williams of St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif. was named the 2020 winner.
