THE POWER RANKINGS: Relentless Stony Point climbs atop Austin Boys Basketball
Uncle!
After several weeks of resisting the urge to move Stony Point to the top of the rankings, deferring to Westwood’s hard-fought undefeated status, we give in. The relentless wave that is the Tigers’ offensive juggernaut finally crashed over the Warriors’ defensive seawall as Stony Point pulled away for a critical 86-59 win. They’ll clash again at Westwood in a few weeks, but for now, the defending 6A state runners-up have moved to the top of our charts.
Westwood only slips to #2 as they also notched a quality win over #5 Round Rock last week but will have to rebound quickly. Surging #7 Vandegrift comes calling on Tuesday to start a pivotal week in District 25-6A that also sees Stony travelling to Round Rock on Tuesday with the Vipers hosting the Dragons on Friday.
Liberty Hill climbs a spot to remain the area’s top-ranked 5A team despite a couple of head-scratching losses earlier in the year, (although keep an eye on Georgetown as the Eagles now lurk just outside the Top10.) Westlake slips a few spots but remains inside the Top 10 after closer-than-expected wins over unranked district foes. Pflugerville Connally, meanwhile, climbs back into the Rankings after a couple weeks outside the charts.
With lots of great matchups coming up this week, we’d like to say things will start to clear up soon, but we know better. Just enjoy watching it all unfold as much as we will!

THE POWER RANKINGS: Undefeated Westwood remains atop Austin-area Boys poll
Westwood swept all four of their games at the Round Rock William Roberts Memorial Tournament to remain the only undefeated team – boys or girls -- in the Austin area. As a result, the Warriors (22-0) remain atop this week’s Power Rankings, with HUGE showdowns coming up against #5 Round Rock to close out 2024 and at #3 Stony Point to open 2025.
St. Michael’s moves up to the second spot while playing in Bristol, TN. slipping past Stony Point, who they’d beaten before Thanksgiving. Stony mustered a misleading 2-2 at the Snoop Johnson Showcase in Lancaster; misleading because both losses came in overtime, including a wild 103-100 double overtime loss to Crowley. (When was the last time you saw both teams crack the century mark in a high school game?)
Westlake, Lago Vista, Liberty Hill and Vandegrift all had successful tournament weekends to solidify their spots in the Top 10. Further down, Rouse rises two spots and Georgetown pops back in the rankings.
All teams now turn their attention to district play as 2024 turns to 2025. Happy New Year!
