Lewisville's Devin Robinson (0) celebrates after returning an interception for a touchdown against Denton Guyer on Friday.
The quest for the District 5-6A title is far from over, but some of the contenders for one of the four playoff berths are coming into focus after Week 7.
After another week of Texas high school football action, three teams are still unbeaten in district play: Denton Braswell, Carrollton Hebron and Lewisville. At least one of those teams will lose this week as Hebron and Lewisville battle for a share of first.
It will be another big game for the Fighting Farmers, who are now 3-3 overall after a 41-7 win over Denton Guyer last week.
Guyer, at the time, was ranked No. 10 in Class 6A.
The win helps the Farmers crack the national Top 25 on MaxPreps.
Lewisville and Guyer were tied at 7-7 after the opening 12 minutes.
The Fighting Farmers dominated from there and the story of the game was how opportunistic they were on offense, defense and special teams.
It started in the first quarter.
Missouri State pledge Derrick Martin IIII had an interception to give Lewisville the ball.
A mere 9 seconds later, the Farmers were in the end zone. Quarterback Aiden Evans connected with Xavier Miles for a 41-yard touchdown.
The Wildcats (4-2, 1-1) had the ball four times in the second quarter and the outcomes were: punt, punt, interception, missed field goal. Meanwhile, Lewisville extended the lead to 28-7.
A wide receiver-to-wide receiver touchdown pass from Duece Mathis to Martin was the first touchdown of the second quarter.
Mathis, a Northern Arizona pledge, had a 73-yard punt return to extend the lead.
Then, Devin Robinson had a 37-yard pick-6 for the Farmers’ defense. The senior is a Sam Houston State pledge.
Guyer, who had previously only lost to then No. 1-ranked Waxahachie, got the ball to open the third.
The drive lasted 4 minutes, but Vahn Malvo picked off Carter Morgan to give the Farmers the ball back.
Then, Lewisville scored again.
But not before 17 players were run and all but the final 38 seconds of the quarter ticked away. Evans, another Sam Houston State pledge, connected with Landon Brazzell for a 15-yard touchdown. That came one play after a 15-yard penalty against Guyer.
Lewisville was facing a 3rd-and-17 from the 30-yard line.
The what-could-go-wrong-did-go-wrong for Guyer continued in the fourth.
The Wildcats punted and Mathis took back 68 yards for his second punt return score of the game.
Guyer got some traction going and put together a 75-yard drive. Morgan ran for 18 yards and was near the goal line. The ball got knocked out at the 1-yard line and turned into a touchback and the Farmers got the ball at the 20-yard line.
Guyer actually had more yards and first downs in the game, 20 to 15 on the latter and then 380 to 272 on yards.
The difference was 5 turnovers by the Wildcats — 3 interceptions and 2 fumbles.
