VYPE Podcast: The Buffalo Run to Glory
By Roger Smith, VYPE
The Fort Bend Marshall Buffs' historic and tumultuous 2018 football season and this season's state championship for the boys' track and field team are the subject of VYPE Sports Radio's second summer retrospective program, The Buffalo Run to Glory: Marshall in 2018-19.
The podcasted audio show is available for free and unlimited listening at https://www.spreaker.com/show/fort-bend-sports-powered-by-vype, or by logging onto vypetexas.com/Houston and clicking "live broadcast."
The hour-long program features interviews with Buffs' track and field coach Lloyd Banks, whose teams have won four UIL team titles in Class 5A in the last five seasons, and head football coach James Williams. There are also clips from VYPE's live football broadcasts, including the "Missouri City Miracle" vs. Huntsville, when Devon Achane's pass to Dalevon Campbell with 12 seconds left snatched a playoff victory out of the jaws of defeat.
The Buffs' 15-1 season was filled with triumph and a devastating tragedy: They vanquished their nemesis, Manvel, in September, one a night when Achane scored seven touchdowns and a two-point conversion in overtime to win 52-51; they added their deluxe dual-threat quarterback, Malik Hornsby, in October; after a 10-0 regular season, the Buffs won their first five playoff games – but before the fifth one, senior defensive back Drew Conley was fatally shot in a domestic dispute.
Three days after Conley's death, Marshall beat Corpus Christi Calallen in the state semi-final in San Antonio before falling to Aledo, 55-19, in the UIL Class 5-A Division II title game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
VYPE Sports Radio produced the first of the summer programs last week. The debut program, "Hoop Dreams" & Hurricanes' new coach, is available, also at https://www.spreaker.com/show/fort-bend-sports-powered-by-vype. It features coach interviews and highlight clips from Hightower, Bush and Elkins, as well as an introductory interview with Joseph Sam, the new Hightower head football coach.
The next VYPE summer show will focus on the legacy schools of Fort Bend ISD, which means the ones that have been open the longest: Dulles, Willowridge, Clements, Kempner and Austin, and will drop the week of July 28. It will feature an interview with two of FBISD's three new head football coaches for 2019, Shane Byrd of Dulles and Austin's Mike Arogbonlo.
