FAT BOY'S PIZZA Player of Month: Travis' Kowalewski leaves legacy before becoming a Gator

Travis softball returns to the diamond this Spring on a mission to earn their third-consecutive District 20-6A Title, while also making a push for some hardware in the postseason.
Fortunately for the Tigers, they’ll have an All-American headlining the team yet again.
Senior catcher/RHP Ariel Kowalewski enters her final year at THS as the back-to-back Unanimous 20-6A MVP, and it wouldn’t be a shock if she ends her high school career with a third. Despite Travis’ defeat to Cinco Ranch in the Bi-District round of last year’s UIL postseason, she has high expectations for this season and hopes to lead her team to greatness.
“We want to win district again and go deeper in the playoffs, than we did last year,” said Kowaleski. “We’re going to do the best we can. Furthermore, I want to leave this school knowing that I was a good leader on and off the field, and always helped my teammates do their best.”
Kowalewski, the youngest of the three children in her family, began her softball journey at a young age when she was compelled to join in.
“Both of my sisters [Ashley and Amber] played softball for a very long time,” she said. “They didn’t end up continuing through college, but they played through high school. I was inspired by my sisters and I wanted to be like them, so just got into the game. I’ve just always been a hard worker and it was my dream to play in college. I just put my mind to it.”
Kowalewski’s dream has come true, considering she will be continuing her softball career at the collegiate level. She signed with the University of Florida in November and will anchor the Gators’ battery for years to come.
“I loved the coaches at Florida… I loved the feel of the campus… I loved everything about it,” Kowalewski said. “The school just felt like home. Playing softball there should be an amazing experience and I hope the school helps me to realize my future. I hope to be an engineer, with two dogs and a family of my own one day.”
Anticipate another stellar season from Ariel Kowalewski and the Travis Tigers. She certainly will.

Seven Lakes basketball, once again, flexed its utter dominance to claim another seemingly inevitable playoff berth. No shocker there.
Picking up right where they left off from last year, the Spartans have eclipsed their competition throughout this season (30-4), comfortably winning a second-consecutive District 19-6A title with an undefeated 15-0 current district record. As of right now, Seven Lakes is the No. 1 ranked team in Houston, as well as the No. 20 team in the state of Texas.
“What makes us special is the number of threats we have,” said junior guard AJ Bates Jr. “We have guys who can get to the rim, guys who can shoot the ball really well. We have a big presence in the middle, with Josh [Akpovwa]. Everyone is dangerous on this team.”

Last season transpired in a similar fashion (32-4; 11-1 in district) for SLHS, but their postseason was cut short due to a nail-biter upset against Bellaire (53-50) in the UIL Area Round.
Considering what the Spartans are showcasing on the court in 2023, the vets will be leaned on to remove that chip on their shoulder.
“This year, we have to really lock in and trust the process,” said Akpovwa. “The only thing stopping us from a State Championship is ourselves.”
Bates, in particular, has been a beast for the Spartans this Winter. Averaging 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game, the 6-foot-2 guard has thoroughly established himself as a leader for the Katy ISD team, elevating the rest of the talented roster.
“Being in the leadership role is something I’m used to,” he said. “ When it comes down to it, our biggest strength has been our guard play because they control every aspect of the game. We have two high-level scorers, in me and Nasir [Price]. Brett [Norton] (Jr.) can get to the rim, as well. Just being able to lead the team to success has been great.”

On top of the scoring threat that Bates provides, the 6-foot-8 Josh Akpovwa incorporates a domineering presence for Seven Lakes hoops. He will be hungry for the chance to put SLHS in the history books, as he will soon be moving on to Incarnate Word at the conclusion of this semester.
“This upcoming postseason means a lot to me and the rest of the seniors,” Akpovwa said. “Even though I will go on to play basketball in college, winning a State Championship my senior year would be a dream come true.”
Playoff season is rapidly approaching, with round one beginning on February 20. The Seven Lakes Spartans are going to be primed to make a statement when that time comes.

The recruiting game never stops, especially in this college football climate.
For over a decade, VYPE has dropped it's Hot 100 Recruits for the next season. With National Signing Day over and Junior Days underway, it's time to unveil the next collection of college prospects.
The Class of 2024 is loaded, period. The QB Class is one of the best in years with Willis' DJ Lagway, The Woodlands' Mabrey Mettauer, Cy-Fair's Trey Owens, Atascocita's Zion Brown and Episcopal's Karson Gordon.
Three of VYPE's Top 10 are offensive linemen, who are highly-coveted, national recruits. Three OL from The Woodlands are on this list, all with offers. The Highlanders should be able to bully teams up front.
On the defensive side of the ball -- the Bayou City boasts 16 talented DBs, eight LBs and 12 DLs.
Rankings will move around in May as new players emerge and the list is re-calibrated. Stay tuned.
