COACH SPEAK: Houston Christian's Crandall talks Mustang Classic, career
One of the best high school basketball tournaments in Texas is once again being hosted by Houston Christian — the storied Mustang Classic.
Now in its 23rd year, the tournament will showcase some of the top teams in Greater Houston and spotlight the No. 1 player in Texas, Second Baptist star Reese Alston.
At the center of it all is longtime Mustang coach Ron Crandall, the architect of the event and one of the most respected voices in the game. Crandall has surpassed 550 career wins, cementing his legacy as one of the state’s elite coaches.
VYPE’s Matt Malatesta caught up with Coach Crandall ahead of the Mustang Classic to talk basketball, his remarkable career, and the 2025 Houston Christian squad.

FORGING AHEAD: No. 25 Iowa Colony hopes to re-establish postseason contention
No. 25 -- IOWA COLONY PIONEERS
Entering his second season at the helm, former Pasadena Memorial coach Trent Olivier aims to elevate the Pioneers after a respectable 23-12 campaign.
One of the youngest varsity programs on Houston’s southside, Iowa Colony finished second in District 20-5A last winter but suffered an early playoff exit at the hands of Port Arthur Memorial—an outcome the team is determined to reverse, hoping to recapture the same momentum they felt when advancing five rounds deep the year prior.
IC will field a veteran-heavy rotation, led by point guard Chase Wiley and forward Jaylen Brown, both all-district honorable mentions. Meanwhile, Bryson Baxter (Sr. F) and Jermaine Thomas (Sr. G) are poised for expanded roles, adding depth and versatility.
