Cy Falls went 8-4 overall and 5-2 in District 16-6A play last year, giving the Golden Eagles a share of the District 16-6A Championship. This was the first time since 2006, the same year they reached the State Championship game, that they finished atop the district. Entering 2023, can they build on that? They have the talent back in the locker room led by Army-commit Trey Morris at running back. Morris, who was the District 16-6A Offensive MVP rushed for more than 1,600 yards and 20 scores a year ago.
Opening up big holes for him to run through will be a trio of first-team, all-district offensive linemen. Samir Camacho leads the crew along with Saul Garagoza and Gemarlin Gaines. Second-teamers Ajani Cargile (WR), Drake Bright (FB), Martin Carreon (DL), Anthony Herrera, Mekhi Gatson (LB), Jacob Sapp (DB) and Meekiel Hosea (DB) are all set to return. This team has a lot of experience on both sides of the ball, making them dangerous and a favorite to repeat as District Champions.
For nine-straight years, Cypress Ranch has been in the playoff picture. The last three trips have ended quickly as the Mustangs have been knocked out in the Bi-District round. Can they get over that hump in 2023? There will be a new QB1 with Blake Baker gone to graduation. Whoever takes over will have weapons, starting with Tracy James. The three-star receiver was a first-team, all-district pick after finishing with 909 yards and nine scores. Opposite him and just as dangerous is Carson Littlefield, who had 1,057 yards and five scores. First-team, all-district back Kyle McCray led the ‘Stangs on the ground with 671 yards and 11 scores. Jason Dennis is a name to remember on the O-Line after being a second-team pick. Gavin Beene will anchor the defense at linebacker after being a first-teamer in 2022. Other names to remember on defense include Niklas Fisher (DL) and Robert Reedus (DB).
The Bridgeland Bears have been in the playoffs in four of their first five seasons as a program, including two 10-win campaigns. David Raffield, who opened the program, retired and now Lonnie Madison comes over from College Park to lead the Bears. Three-star defensive lineman Omar Khan, who has verbally committed to Washington, will anchor the D-Line. Andre Roy is a Class of 2025 prospect to also watch on that side of the ball for Bridgeland along with linebacker Karson Krause, who was the District 16-6A Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2022. Jonte Newman (first-team, all-district) and Ben Mullholland (second-team, all-district) will be two of the big pieces on the offensive line. Newman is a big-time college prospect. First-team, all-district defensive back Phillip Meyers and second-team, all-district defensive back Chase Shorts are also set to return.
Langham Creek was on the outside of the playoff picture in 2022, finishing 4-3 in district play. The Lobos are seeking to snap a four-year playoff drought in 2023. Texas tight-end commit Jordan Washington will play a role in that. The three-star tight end committed to the Longhorns in July. The QB1 getting him the ball will be District 16-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year Braylon Scott. Other names to remember for the Lobos include Cole Molina (OL) and C.J. Anizor (DL).
Cypress Springs could be the sleeper pick of District 16-6A. The Panthers in their history have made the playoffs once (2003). First-team, all-district quarterback Harrison Mass (Army-commit) is back under center and could lead them back 20 years later. Last year, Mass passed for 1,615 yards and 13 touchdowns, while running for another 544 yards and seven scores. First-team, all-district running back Timothy Saunders finished with 979 yards in 2022, while receiver Nicholas Brown (first-teamer) finished with a team-leading 516 yards. Ashton Blake (441 yards) is another weapon at receiver for Mass. Also watch out for the Richardson brothers, Rashod and Jamon, at receiver who both have DI offers. Isaac Suarez will anchor the O-Line after being a first-team, all-district pick. Defensively, first-team, all-district pick Ryan Lynch (DL) and second-teamer Logan Bloom Jr. (LB) are set to return. Darrien Foreman was an honorable-mention pick at defensive back after leading the team with two interceptions.
Cy Woods was a playoff team a year ago and is on a five-year playoff appearance streak. Second-team, all-district quarterback Aiden Horton (1,330 yards, 12 TDs) will lead the offense along with Ace Perez (OL), WRs Kyler Singletary and Ty Cogdill. They have a lot of holes to fill on defense.
Cy Lakes and Cy Park are coming off tough seasons where they combined to win one district game. Cy Park brings back Iowa State-commit Deyon Batiste at quarterback and Ryan Rasco at running back, while Cy Lakes, which will be under new head coach Marshall Green, brings back Jordan Patton (DB) and Jayvion Wolf (RB).
