Lutheran South's Marcus Cantu
ON DECK: Cantu’s Next Chapter with LSA and Beyond
Marcus Cantu is one of the elite shortstops in Texas — if not the country.
So when the Lutheran South Academy diamond king flipped his commitment from the University of Texas to Coastal Carolina… heads turned.
Why?
PURCHASE THE 2026 BASEBALL/SOFTBALL PREVIEW
The Chanticleers were fresh off a run to the College World Series Finals, finishing No. 2 nationally in 2025 after falling to eventual champion LSU. Texas, meanwhile, finished No. 18. For Cantu, the decision came down to development and opportunity.
“Coastal Carolina really develops their players, and that was a huge selling point,” he said. “I’ll have an opportunity to get on the field as a freshman at one of the top programs in the country. That’s all you can ask.”
Winning has always followed Cantu.
He started at quarterback for the Pioneers as a freshman, leading them to the playoffs while racking up more than 1,500 yards of offense and 16 touchdowns. But his journey hasn’t been smooth. Injuries sidelined him during parts of his freshman and sophomore seasons before he returned fully healthy as a junior — and hungrier than ever.
“Going through that was very difficult,” he said. “That’s what made last year so special — winning state with that group of guys. We were so close and had such great chemistry. That was the difference.
“What I love about LSA is that state is the standard. The older guys help the younger guys prepare for varsity, and it’s a seamless transition.”
When he’s not taking hacks in the cage, the left-handed slugger can usually be found at Chipotle.
“If I had an NIL deal, I’d want it there,” he laughed. “I eat there all the time — the same thing every time… a bowl with double rice, double chicken, lettuce, salsa and cheese.”
And if he could share a meal with anyone in history?
“It would be Jesus,” he said. “Just sitting there talking and asking all the questions I could think of would be pretty special.”
Talent may open doors, but Cantu’s perspective and perseverance suggest his biggest moments are still ahead — and he’s stepping into them with confidence.
BREAKING: 2025 Galveston Ball 5-Star ATH Williams Commits To Texas
Everybody says ‘Everything’s bigger and better in Texas’ and the players seen on a Friday night in the lonestar state are no exception to that saying.
Today one of those individuals made his commitment and decided to play for one of the biggest brands in sports that just so happens to be in-state.
2025 Galveston Ball five-star Athlete Jonah Williams has committed to Texas over LSU, Texas A&M, Oregon, and USC a week before he opens up his senior season against Manvel on the 29th.
Though many people had predicted the talented Ball super-star to land with another in-state school Texas A&M, it became a battle between LSU and Texas down the stretch with Texas edging them out.
“The fit, the relationships with the coaches, the life after football,” Williams Said. “You can’t give up an opportunity like that when you’re born and raised in Texas.”

Early playing time and development were big factors for Williams recruitment as he is an early grad, along with Texas having two safeties who will be leaving after this year and a coach who’s been where he wants to be, Texas was the easy choice.
“I want to get on the field as early as possible,” he said. “Coach Gideon the safety coach there started as a true freshman and knows what it takes to be able to get that playing time early and develop me into the player I am trying to become.”
Williams commits to Texas as a dual-sport athlete where he will play football and baseball for the Longhorns.
“Being able to display my God-given talent in both baseball and football is just truly a blessing. Texas is a ‘Blue Blood’ in both sports so the ability to be able to compete in at a high level in both sports and win some natty’s is something that means a lot to me.”
Now committed, the five-star will look to have a big senior year in his last round wearing the purple-and-gold.
But before the season begins, he has one message for Longhorn fans.
“Longhorns let’s win the natty already… it’s been overdue!”
