INSTANT REPLAY: Highlights from the St. John XXIII Cross Country Classic Race
As the regular season commences for numerous cross country programs in the private school sector, St. John XXIII hosted their annual SJ23 XC Classic this past Saturday, which featured hundreds of competitors from across the state showcasing all the work they've put in over the course of the Summer.
When all said and done on the boys' side, Lutheran South Academy's Reid Toner had taken gold in the two-mile race, with a time of 9:22.50, while Mason Collette (St. Pius X/9:32.30) and Stephen McClelland (HHSA/9:34.70) followed shortly after.
For the girls, Legacy Prep's Emily Kacher wound up in the No.1 spot, clocking in at 11:29.90, with Charlotte Freeman (LPCA/11:34.60) and Madeline Hellen (Frassati Catholic/11:38.60) claiming second and third, respectively.
That doesn't mean the hosts didn't have some stand-outs.
Averi Garrity (4th overall/11:47.70), Amelie Moloney (6th/12:28.80), and Kristen McCain (10th/12:39.00) were the front-runners for St. John XXIII in Saturday's race, while Matthew Muraski (7th/9:46.00), Luke Ottosen (12th/10:12.90), Colton Biehunko (15th/10:21.90), and Paul Cosgray (18th/10:26.70) each finished within the top-20.

The 2023 All-VYPE Boys Cross Country Team presented by Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine
The Houston area was a hot-bed for some of the most proficient long-distance runners in the state this Fall, which can be seen by the results in both the private and public school sectors.
St. Thomas cruised to a state title, as seven of the Eagles' runners finished in the top-20 of the final meet for the TAPPS-6A competition. Similarly, in the SPC-4A State Meet, Episcopal featured three competitors placing in the top-10 -- including gold and silver medalists -- which earned the Knights their first state championship in program history.
On the public school scene, Tompkins ended up being the highest ranked Houston team in Class 6A after placing fourth overall in the state meet, with College Park and Bridgeland trailing just behind them.
With all that in mind, it's time to announce the 2023 All-VYPE Boys Cross Country team presented by Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.
