Second Baptist School Magazine: Three Sport Stud
JULIA SAUVAGEAU CAN DO IT ALL.
The Second Baptist School junior is an all-district performer in volleyball, soccer, and softball, who has been raised on one ball field or another. It's a family business.
"My parents aren't professional athletes or anything, but my dad played hockey, soccer, and baseball competitively growing up," said Sauvageau. "Ever since we were little, he always wanted us involved in sports. It's been a part of our entire life."
Her sister, Olivia, who is a freshman, stars in basketball and soccer as well.
They are a cross-training family juggling four different sports, but how do those sports help each other?
"Volleyball has really taught me how to be a leader and a great teammate," Sauvageau explained. "That translates to soccer and softball. You have to be really quick on your feet in soccer, so that speed helps enhance both volleyball and softball."
Team sports are her strong suit, feeding on the camaraderie of the group.
"I just like getting to the point where you can trust in your teammates and really work together," she said. "There's nothing better than that. When you score that goal or point, it's fun to celebrate because you did it together."
As she moves into her senior season, Sauvageau shares a valuable piece of advice to incoming freshmen at Second Baptist School.
"This has been a really fun experience. At Second Baptist School, there is a balance between great academics and playing sports at a competitive level," she said. "You have to take advantage of all the opportunities you can; you never know what you are going to be successful at when you first get here."
She added, "Make as many friends as you can. They can help you in every aspect of your life, and you can return the favor."
Sauvageau is starting to look at colleges and likes the Southeastern Conference schools. She is interested in sports management, social media and architecture. The avid athlete wants to be "part of a team in the future, whether it's building a house or building a company.
Second Baptist School Magazine: A Positive Impact
NAME ANY CLUB, COMMITTEE, OR TEAM AT SECOND BAPTIST SCHOOL, AND THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT CAMERON KELLEY '22 IS INVOLVED WITH IT.
The junior has taken a very active role at SBS since coming on campus in the sixth grade, and she wouldn't want it any other way.
"I've always wanted to be involved; I want to make a positive impact wherever I go," Kelley said. "I don't just want to sit back complacently. I've always had a busy schedule, so I wouldn't know what to do if my time wasn't filled."
Kelley is a cheerleader and plays soccer for the Eagles. She is also a communications fellow, part of the business and Spanish club, and is going to be a student life prefect her senior year.
"I like to keep myself busy," Kelley said with a laugh.
Sports have always played a big role in Kelley's life. Cheerleading is more fun because she understands all the sports, Kelley shared.
"Cheer works on finesse, performance, and practicing skills," she said. "Team building and working with a group of girls are other important aspects that translate to everything in life."
Of all the different activities Kelley is involved with, soccer has a special place in her heart.
"I grew up playing soccer, so being able to do that in upper school has been really fun," Kelley said.
Being at a place that has embraced her active lifestyle has "meant everything" to Kelley, who knows Second Baptist School has impacted her for life.
"The community here is incredible," she said. "It's really unlike anything that you find anywhere else. Everything we do goes back to Christian education. All the teachers and friends are so welcoming, so loving, and always encouraging. If you ever need anything, you can reach out to anyone. I know the friendships and relationships that I've built here will impact me for the rest of my life."
After her time at Second Baptist School is over, Kelley wants to go to the east coast for college, where she wants to pursue a pre-law track and minor in communications. She loves Columbia; her dream school is Harvard – where her dad went; and also likes Vanderbilt, Virginia, North Carolina, and Duke.
Kelley's dreams are big, and her capacity to achieve them is certain.
