HEAT INDEX: VYPE San Antonio 2026 Preseason Softball Rankings
Momentum from last spring carries into 2026, beginning with East Central. The Hornets are coming off a breakthrough postseason run that culminated in a 6A Division I state semifinal appearance — the first UIL State Tournament berth in school history. That experience, paired with a return to the state’s largest classification, sets the tone entering the new campaign.
Close behind is Smithson Valley, which surged to a 26-4 record and dominated district play before advancing to the 5A Division I state semifinals — its deepest playoff push since the program’s 2012 championship season. The Rangers headline a strong 5A presence that also includes Veterans Memorial, a steady contender looking to build on last year’s postseason appearance.
The 6A ranks remain crowded with challengers. O’Connor, Reagan and Steele each reached the area round a year ago, while Johnson, Clemens and Taft add further depth to a classification defined by balance and familiarity. Several of those programs posted double-digit district win totals in 2025, underscoring just how narrow the margins should be this spring.
Meanwhile, 4A is once again anchored by Davenport, which advanced three rounds deep in the Division I bracket last season. With postseason pedigree spread across multiple classifications, the preseason hierarchy is established — but the climb back to May promises to be anything but predictable.

THE TIER LIST: Final VYPE SATX Softball Rankings prior to imminent 2025 Playoffs
As April winds down, so does the UIL softball regular season—and the road to Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin is officially underway.
With the revamped playoff format in place, teams will soon split into divisions and begin their postseason journey.
In the San Antonio area, several programs look more than capable of making a serious push toward State in the coming weeks.
Leading the way are the O’Connor Panthers, who closed the regular season on a 12-game win streak and now carry a strong 19-2 record into the postseason. Right behind them in District 28-6A is Harlan (19-4), another dangerous squad capable of a deep playoff run.
In Class 5A, Smithson Valley has been dominant all year, going unbeaten in District 26-5A to post an impressive 18-1 mark. SA Veterans Memorial (18-3) also remains firmly in the mix after a strong regular season showing.
Out of Class 4A, Davenport (19-7-1) continues to build on its reputation as a regional powerhouse, while 6A contenders like East Central, Johnson, Taft, and Cibolo Steele have also put together solid campaigns.
With district titles now settled and playoff brackets on the horizon, San Antonio’s top teams are shifting their focus to the most important stretch of the spring—where history is decided.
