Lufkin flexing on football field; volleyball just misses playoffs
Under the direction of coach Todd Quick, the Lufkin Panthers are in full flex mode on the football field.
The Panthers crushed Magnolia West last weekend 52-7 to virtually ensure Lufkin of a district title. At 5-0, Lufkin faces Caney Creek and Waller to wrap up the season.
Quick's squad has state aspirations. Pretty bold, right? Well, the Panthers have run the table after only falling to defending state champ Longview in Week 1 in a tight 24-21 game. Lufkin is averaging 42 points per game on offense with a balanced attack with QB Jordan Moore running the show. Texas Tech-commit Ja'Lynn Polk stretches the field as a 6-foot-2 receiver. Their stingy defense is led by safety Jerrin Thompson (Texas-commit) and Tre Odom, holding opponents to 14 points per game.

The Lufkin Panthers volleyball team wrapped up their 2019 season, narrowly missing the playoffs. Coach Leah Flores ties with Pine Tree HS was a 6-8 district finish, however, the Pirates swept the season series to get in the postseason.
The good news is that Lufkin was young this season and return leading hitters Kelby Coutee, Courtnee Morgan and Natalie Fox. Libby Flores was the freshman hitter, leading the team in assists.

Lufkin Player of the Week presented by T-Mobile: Caleb Encarnacion
Heading into Lufkin's Week 6 showdown with Magnolia, Caleb Encarnacion had made two field goals on the season.
The junior kicker was the best kicker in District 8-5A-DI having made 19 extra points and the two field goals and en route to a 24-18 victory for the Panthers, Encarnacion was the key.
Encarnacion first nailed 38-yard and 25-yard field goals in the first half, giving Lufkin the 6-0 lead at the break. The two field goals had already matched his season high.
Later in the night, the game tied at 12-12 with 8:58 remaining, Encarnacion nailed his third field goal of the night. This one from 33 yards gave the Panthers the 15-12 lead.
With 2:27 left in the game, leading 21-18, Lufkin needed that final exclamation point to put them up by at least six. Encarnacion delivered from 23 yards, putting the Panthers up 24-18, which would be the final.
Entering the game, the kicker who had made two field goals all season ends up kicking four (38, 25, 33, 23) to score 12 of the Panthers' eventual 24 points.
Now, that's a clutch kicker.
