John Cooper Cross Country opens season at Friday Night Lights
Finally, there was some sports under the Friday Night Lights.
Whenever people think of Friday Night Lights, the first thought is football but, in The Woodlands, last week there was a different kind of sport that involved running that took place under those said lights – Cross Country.
The John Cooper School cross country teams were off to the races in that annual race. Nine girls set new personal records for the Dragons in the two-mile race, while almost every boy improved on their times from 2018.
The Cooper boys' team ran in the Varsity B (4K) race, putting two runners in the Top 20. Junior Will McDermott finished seventh with a time of 13:35 (PR) followed by senior Cadan Hanson in 17th place with a personal record of 13:56. Sophomore Vishnu Swaminathan also ran well in his first cross country meet finishing in 31st place. Carson Hanson and Alex Everson rounded out the Top 5 scorers for Cooper.
Mansfield head football coach Tim Cothran works with the Tigers on Wednesday, July 17th, 2019, as they prepare for the upcoming 3A-4 season. Mansfield begins the season on Aug. 29 at home against Hackett.
‘Preacher Man’ Cothran eager to extend Mansfield’s gridiron run
By Kevin Taylor
MANSFIELD — A soft summer rain has dampened the parking lot outside Tim Cothran's makeshift coach's office at Mansfield High School — a far cry to the blistering heat that descends on Mansfield's practice field behind the field house.
Adjacent to the Tigers' weight room, and within a short distance from a glass cooler that includes just about everything you'll find in a refrigerator, including bottles of water and plastic ketchup and mustard bottles, the veteran football coach is mapping out his plans for the week.
There will be senior high and junior high workouts. Cothran was hoping to squeeze in a couple of potential coaching interviews this week as well, a few days ahead of next week's monthly school board meeting.
The calendar might say July. But for Tim Cothran, it may as well be mid-October.
