VYPE 411: Bacon Chooses UTSA To Stay At Home
The San Antonio area produces a lot of top tier athletes. That's why VYPE San Antonio editor/reporter Thomas Bingham caught up with San Antonio East Central softball player and 2020 UTSA commit Lourdes Bacon this week. Check out our VYPE 411 Q&A segment to learn about the college opportunity on the northwest side of San Antonio, goals for the 2020 high school softball season and more.
Bingham: "You're a 2020 UTSA softball commit. What excites you about the opportunity and why was it the right choice to stay in San Antonio?"
Bacon: "What excites me is having my family there, but also getting to play four more years of something I absolutely love. Staying local in San Antonio was a big deal for me, as my family has been extremely supportive of me playing softball and having them there to watch me play at UTSA was very important."
Bingham: "When did the offer come in and how honored were you when you received it?"
Bacon: "My offer came in during my freshman year and I felt extremely honored to be given the opportunity to play at UTSA, as well as play for coach [Michelle] Cheatham."
Bingham: "You're a senior at San Antonio East Central. How do you act as a leader for the softball team and what needs to happen to finish your high school career on the right note?"
Bacon: "I act as a leader based off of my actions on and off the field. I respect and support my teammates and give 100% every time I touch the field, and hope that my hard work motivates others. Our goal every year in district is to make playoffs and make it past first round and, if we as a team leave everything on the field, we have a pretty good chance of doing that."
Bingham: "Last season, your softball program made the postseason. What did you and your teammates learn from that run and how do y'all build off that this year?"
Bacon: "We learned how important our team chemistry needs to be, and this year our team chemistry has been the best since I've been here. We all play for one another and support each other, and we're hoping it will show come playoff time."
Bingham: "For people that haven't seen you compete, how would you describe the way you play and practice?"
Bacon: "I am a big competitor, show a lot of passion and I work hard at this sport. I play like I practice. I'm focused [and] determined, but [am] having fun, playing loose and enjoying my teammates."
