The time has come to kick off the 2019 football season for the Second Baptist School Eagles. Terry Pirtle enters his seventh season at the helm of the program coming off a state semifinals appearance going 11-2 in 2018. The Eagles also won the TAPPS District 5-Division II Championship last season, making it six straight years with a district title.
The Eagles open this year with hopes of playing for a state title at year's end. The first big test of the season comes in Week 1 against Geneva, a fellow defending district champion.
Geneva is coming off a 10-4 season where the Eagles won the TAPPS District 3-Division III Championship. Geneva enters this year trying to reach its fourth-straight State Championship Game.
"I think our team is prepared and ready for Geneva, I know our offense is ahead of where it was last year and our defense should be our strength this year," Pirtle said. "We have a very good defense this year."
One of those four losses suffered by Geneva in 2018 came at the hands of Second Baptist School. It was a 26-9 season-opening loss on the road.

PLAYER TO WATCH
Josh Johnson - Offensively, it all begins and ends with the quarterback. The dual-threat star will be one to watch this season. Johnson passed for more than 1,400 yards and rushed for another 1,100 yards. He is a superstar. Johnson will set the tone early in this game and this season.
"Josh Johnson is going to light it up this year," Pirtle said. "He has worked his rear end off with his throwing mechanics. He's an unbelievable leader. So far, he's definitely a kid that is way under colleges' radar. He's going to end up playing somewhere big time. So far he hasn't gotten the offer he deserves.
"So, I think he's out to prove a point this year, which is great for us."
