62nd Annual Whataburger Basketball Tournament - Winners Take Home Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas – Dec. 28, 2019 – The Whataburger 62nd Annual Basketball Tournament came to a close yesterday with three teams coming out victorious atop their divisions.

Duncanville won the championship in the Boys Orange Division, while Decatur took home the trophy in the Boys Blue Division, and Liberty Christian brought home the victory for the Girls Blue Division.

The historic tournament provides a platform for 48 teams to grow and challenge themselves by competing against a talented field of teams from all over the state. The winners of each division are awarded $1,000 scholarships to aide student athletes in continuing their success beyond the courts to the classroom.

The Whataburger Basketball Tournament has long served as a national stage for top players to sharpen their skills and impress scouts, with some moving on to professional careers as players and coaches in the NBA. Seven talented athletes across the three divisions have already committed to play Division 1 basketball at universities, including Texas Tech, Butler, William & Mary, University of Houston and more.

"For more than six decades the Whataburger Basketball Tournament has been a highlight of our year, and this latest tournament has added another thrilling chapter to the competition's storied history," said Whataburger Director of Operations Scott Phillips. "The talent and effort displayed by these athletes, as well as the support of their families and fans, are what makes this tournament so special year after year. We are so grateful for each and every one of them, and send our congratulations to the winning teams."

This year's tournament brought a new venue into the fold, with Mansfield Legacy High School hosting the Orange Division and providing greater access and convenience for fans. Through 62 years and multiple venues, the tournament continues to draw top-tier talent and competition. More than 20 former tournament athletes have moved on to pro basketball, more than 1,700 high school teams have represented, more than 20,000 athletes have participated and more than 102,000 Whataburgers have been served at the tournament.
